I'm a left hand caster and naturally strip line from the reel with my right hand. Question: Are SIDE mount automatic reels built to be used for either left or right hand stripping? I've noticed that there are two line openings in photos on ebay. Is there a setting that can be adjusted so the reel spool can take in or give out line in either direction? Or are side mounting automatics primarily for left hand strippers? Thanks, Tom

Here's an example of what I'm a bit confused about. ebay item 370227476331. If You strip line with the left hand the spool would be be unwinding clockwise. If you strip line with the right hand using the other side opening it appears that the spool should turn counterclockwise for line clearance. If the spool only turns clockwise to release line it looks like the line would constantly rub on the side of the opening with right hand stripping. Perhaps the opening is large enough to let the line pass without constant rubbing. If there is no mechanism to reverse the spool line out and line in direction it would appear to me that this side mount design would be better suited for a lefty stripper than right. The single opening hang down automatic design might be better suited for right hand line stripping. Tom

Posts: 854 (07/12/09 05:01:43) Administrator Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	The automatic reel will only wind one way - there's no reversing of the spool direction like there is when changing a single action reel from RHW to LHW. That said, the reel will work perfectly for your application. The line will come out on the left-hand slot, the reel will rotate counterclockwise when the lever is depressed to retrieve line. You'll be stripping the line "across" the reel, but that won't cause a problem because the line guides are smooth on all sides. You're looking to pull the line from the right-hand side guide, but that opening is for symmetry only, not to actually pull the line through or it will bend back across the guide on retrieve and you'll find the reel binding and excess line wear. Don't sweat it - use the reel and your right hand to control the line and nothing bad will come from it. And the 1837 is a great reel, btw. Joe C. The side mount reels are a bother when stripping line with my right hand, as the line is hanging away from my R hand and as Joe mentioned, you will be pulling the line across the reel. While it works it is not ideal at all. Tom, you are correct, the side mount reels are better suited for a lefty stripper. ANd yes, the "Hangdown" models are better for a RH stipper, they also have the spring controls in a postion that are easier for a LH caster to deal with, as they are on the right side of the reel. The wind direction is a constant. To the extent the line contacts the line guard, it's no different than the angle of the line through a stripping guide when line is brought in. The way they are used, there isn't much furious fast stripping out of long lengths of line anyway, and winding in is usually just to pick up slack coils. So a theoretically perfectly smooth flow on or off the reel isn't that critical. Let us use official nomenclature: vertical mount and horizontal mount. The horizontals like that one came first, I believe, going back to a Martin design. Colston, I think they used their fly rods to pole in an emergency. The automatic reels were handier to thwack off marauding beaver, alligators or turtles, not to mention dispatching a too-big-for-the-net crappie, bass, pickerel, sucker, carp or gar, which saved reaching for the pistol and using up a perfectly good .38 hollow point. Love the automatic reel, very handy for some fishing.

People who turn their noses up at auto reels have not done much fishing out of a boat for bream or bass, in my opinion. I think they are the best thing since sliced bread for that kind of fishing and that's why they were probably invented in the first place. I don't use one for saltwater or freshwater trout fishing, because salties and big trout can run out of sight, and you might to need to fight them from the reel. But bream and bass don't usually go that far and the auto gets all that darned line out of the way of your feet. My experience with loose fly line in a boat shows that it will tangle on everything from my fat feet, to paddles, to the motor, to anything else in sight. I fished with a snooty bamboo friend one day for bluegills, and he snickered when he say my glass rod and auto reel. But by the third or fourth fish, he had changed his tune. It's a case of using the proper tools for the job at hand. I like a good bamboo rod and Hardy reel for trout fishing, but for chasing 'gills, give me an auto and a good knock-around-tough glass rod.
