Thanks for your time.

If this question has been discussed before, forgive me, but I could not find such a thread by searching the forum. I see in a earlier post that a SPG780 blank
will make a rod that will cast a 5/6 weight line, is that correct?

I rate mine a medium action #4/5 and like it a lot. It is a powerful rod and could cast a #6 if you like a slower stroke.
I think Pearow may have built a 781 and I guess it would be a #7 at least. I suspect a 782 would not be viable as a fly rod. There is also a cheap (?$15) janns netcraft 8' 2p#6 glass spinning blank hat Loudog99 has built up - he trimmed the butt section 6" and rated the result a #7. |

Thanks for the replies, does anyone have first hand knowledge about the 781? I wanted to build a short heavier rod and think the 781 would be a good choice but
want to be sure.

the 781 will throw a sinker over the post office; they are powerful; 7 or 8 weight; maybe a 6 or 9; according to your casting style and preference; it takes an
#8 line to load the rod under 30 feet-p-

I am currently working on a my own SPG780, just have to wrap and finish the guides. To me, the rod feels like a solid 4wt and I'll try a 4wt first. I fish
a Headstart WF5F on my SPG720 and the additional 6" on the 780 surely make it feel a bit less powerful to me. I would inagine that the 781 is a solid 7wt,
but you could use a line down or up depending on your preferences. One of the great things about these blanks is that they really can handle 3 to 4 different
lines depending on your preferences and needs. I think you would be very pleased with a 781 for a short heavy rod.
EDIT: I built up 2 of the 2pc SPG781 blanks that are no longer made and DPenrod on the board has them both. I used mine with a 6wt line and it was OK and Darin fishes them as 7wts and loves them with that line. I would think the 1 pc blanks are similar. Lou

question: how does cutting the one-piece blanks and installing spigots affect the rod's resulting "best lineweight"?
Like if I made the 780 into s 3pc., would it still be a 3/4? anyone done this yet?

Corlay,
Some pics from its first outing on the river (jungle/creek) Dore - rod fished superbly handling small dries through to - with less aplomb - weighted #8
woolly b's.

Great pics- that little rod looks great from here. Love the fact that there are so many folks fishing these little gems.
