Unexpected Glass Encounter |
Lead | |
|
While fishing on Wednesday I happened on a few occasions to walk by a black pick-up with a rod sticking out of the bed. The rod looked like a casting rod given
the stoutness of the reinforced tiptop. On one walk by, the owner was nearby and asked how I was doing and what I used. In the course of conversation he picked
his rod up to show me what he was using and low and behold it was an 8' black glass fly rod with gold foil trim and a black automatic reel. From the looks
of it, the rod was a late seventies creation and I'm pretty sure the reel, line and rod had never been apart from the day it was put together. I asked if
he fished much and he said he used it almost every day. Whatever it was that was one tough ass rod and one lucky fisherman.

Nevadak,
Wonderful story, some thing I've seen in my travels also. Local fishermen, using their equipment with out any concerns as to make/model or year. Respectfully rvreclus |

I have met a lot of older guys over the years, myself included, who fished with a rig like that for bass, bream and crappie. The often sneered at automatic
reel is very handy in a boat when you are fishing close in with fish that don't run too far. A lot of so-called 'traditionalists" and
nose-in-the-air, fashion-conscious yuppies might turn their noses up at an outfit like that, but I can attest that it's darned handy in the above scenario.
First and foremost I'm just a fisherman, and I don't really care what other people think, and I'll bet a lot of you guys feel the same way. An
automatic reel in a boat is a god-send for keeping me from getting loose line wound around me and everything else in sight. I'm the guy who can tangle up a
wireless microphone. I got over 30 years out of my old Perrine auto before I decided to "clean" it and the darned spring got loose from me went
everywhere. Now I will have to find another one....

Sounds like my first fly gfishing outfit...A black H&I with gold foil and red wraps plus an auto reel. Reel broke the first time I used it and the rod was
terrible, altho I syill have it. (It must be something about aging glass...the rod casts a lot better now than it did at first.)

I was fishing a locally famous crick once a few years ago, and the guy catching all the big fish was using some Walmart special glass rod and cheap reel. Am
sure it was a level line too. He could barely cast the thing, I loved every minute of it, all the Orvis types around were suffering terribly.
