My wife is fairly hardcore...um, let me rephrase that...my wife loves to fly fish and doesn't miss a road trip. She uses graphite, knows I use glass and cane but hasn't shown any interest in switching or even trying the others. Should I introduce her to them or consider myself lucky that she isn't begging to use my favorites or asking for her own? Catch and Release fishing is a lot like golf. You don't have to eat the ball to have a good time.

What a wonderful way to spend time together. You are truly blessed, my friend. She might not appreciate it just yet, but she's very lucky, too. When she begins to show an interest in glass or cane, you'll be right there to teach her & show her how wonderful they are..... Just my philosophical 2 cents.

As far as her weapon in those endeavors I'd let her choose her own and not encourage her to switch to bamboo or glass until she reaches the point where she expresses an interest in them. At that point I'd share all the knowledge you have on grass and glass with her and encourage her to slow down and smell the roses! But above all appreciate what you already have and remember that different fly fishers have different preferences when it comes to rod actions.

I agree completely that the main thing to realize is how fortunate you are to have a Mrs. Cofisher that likes to fly fish with you...... BUT, this is also an opportunity to get a few much needed glass rods for her that would otherwise be looked at as duplicates if you were the only one that would be using them . I'm also lucky that Mrs TDoc enjoys fly fishing, and doesn't even complain when she has to go with me She is NOT however all that interested in what tackle she uses, so I get the great benefit of "needing" to outfit her with tackle to try. So far, we've been VERY happy with this arrangement....... Mark B Something to consider: Be willing to share photos, information and the knowledge you have about your collection with anyone that has an interest in learning...........also share your knowledge to answer questions that others may have about items in their collections.........doing this will make you feel good and benefits this community ..................after all, what good is having knowledge that isn't shared. I love having them out with me so it is a great time. But, I have the exact opposite problem with tackle. I have been building fiberglass rods for about two years. I finally built her a really nice 7'3" tadpole. She hasn't fished it yet. So this winter I started building PMQ bamboo rods. Well, she saw the first 4 bamboo rods that I built and she decided that she wanted one! I don't think she will ever use the glass tadpole ... she just loves the look of the flamed bamboo rods. shawn

If I made my own rods I would be less likely to even worry about my wife wanting bamboo or a nice glass rod. Shawn, if you haven't already done so, check out the where I'm from and where do I fish post at the top of this category. Evil minds want to know. Guys, don't misunderstand me, I'm very thankful that my lovely wife enjoys fly fishing almost as much as I do. I'd rather fish with her than anyone in the world right now except maybe Wacokid. Dennis is a great fishing partner and is one of the top three funniest people I know. I guess maybe I'm operating on a bit of guilt because she's happy with her two graphite rods while I die of indecision every time I go fishing trying to make up my mind whether I want to fish glass (always my first choice.) or cane which I only use under specific conditions and which particular rod. That's not even mentioning my ever expanding reel collection. Catch and Release fishing is a lot like golf. You don't have to eat the ball to have a good time.

It's good to know there are other wives out there with the sickness. Flygoddess, I wouldn't have it any other way. p.s.- I don't have to pay for flies or furled leaders either. It reached the point that I couldn't hook up to the boat without her sensing it and being in the passenger seat by the time I got the lights hooked up. Guys I'm telling you; after a while I couldn't even look at it without her asking where we were going and when we were leaving. I don't complain either though. I sold the boat instead..... She use graphite and has kind of taken "possession" of my T&T LPS. My wife isn't as devoted to it as I am and isn't physically up to the demands of a lot of water, but we find ways to make do. I'm happy to have around even when helping her takes time away from when I could be working a hole. We see it as a chance to be together. K

Must confess, I started fly tying first, ONLY as a way to enable my husband to fish ... had to find something for him to do after he retired, so he wasn't hanging around the house all the time. First time, however, that I flung that fly .... well ... it was all over but the shouting! He now ties his own flies, I tie mine ... and I build all our rods, graphite, glass and bamboo, and furl all our leaders. I'd suggest you have glass and bamboo rods available in every imagined size, and let her know she's welcome to try any and/or all of them out. Just being helpful! From the other side of the coin, despite my best efforts, my wife doesn't hunt or fish but she is a trooper when it comes to indulging my habits. After a dental setback to my kayak fund this spring, she surprised me with the extra funds I needed for my birthday last week. Although she didn't want to accompany me to the kayak shop, she did want to come along to Cabela's for the mandatory accessory fact finding mission. After 31+ years of marriage, I have resigned myself to the fact that these activities are just not for her but then again, I don't do scrapbooking and jewlery making either. Doug

The first rod I stuck in her hand was fiberglass. She doesn't know the difference between glass/grass/broomsticks, but she did fish the Granger you sold me over the weekend. By the way, the rod's name is Cofisher! I don't care what rod she ends up with, it is just a blessing she is out there casting away with me without complaining! TW

But, it was such a sweet rod that I decided to keep it and added it to my wife's arsenal. She asked why when the other rod was still good. (9' St Croix) She still doesn't understand the purpose of a boatload of rods and reels. Trent, thank you for the honor. Catch and Release fishing is a lot like golf.
