I went to my favorite "little" pond for a little bream fishing during lunch today. I really wasn't expecting much since it's about 742
degrees outside today. But usually the bream don't care much. Well I caught a small bass that was chasing little bream around in the shallow water. I
caught a little bream, but it got off. No big deal, it was only slightly larger than the fly. And then I hooked what I thought to be a 2-3 lb bass. Once i got
it up close to enough to see, I realize that it is a rather nice sized bream of some sort. It would be pushing close to a pound. I did notice that it was being
followed by a couple of bass and a few other bream. I had it in shallow water when one of those bass that was following it around took it from me. The bass
would have to be more than 7 lbs. to get a bream that big in it's mouth. i did see it's back, I would concur. Anyway, what i've learned from my
little experience is that 5x tippet is too light for my "little" pond. Anyway, natural selection is beautiful thing to see in nature as long as
you're not the one on the menu.

swalker, great story!! don't be afraid to use 4x or 3x tippet. that's what I usually use here in pa for sunfish and bass, they aren't leader shy
like trout are, plus it's nice to be able to rip your popper out of the weeds when it gets stuck!!too bad you didn't land that big bass!! I guess you
could be accused of using "bait" then!! ha ha!

It's always a shocker to have the fish you're fighting get nailed by something from the deep. Cool story!
In GA warmwater, I hardly ever use anything lighter than 2x. Even if I'm fishing small equal opportunity flies ( sz.6-8 ) I still stay with the 2x. Occasionally if I'm dead-drifting deep in current I'll use a long tippet of 3x to get down quicker but it wouldn't even occur to me to use anything lighter. Most of my bass fishing is done in rivers with 0x and sz.2 to 2/0 bugs.

Sean,
Never fails that something like this happens when you're rigged for guppies. |

Went back out last night with baitcasting gear. A five bass limit of 30+ pounds in less than an hour. I know it's not fiberglass fly fishing but fun none
the less.

Nice! It may not be glass fly rods, but it is still fishing and fun.
Oh, and I'm more than a little jealous! Tom |

5 fish - average weight 6lbs? That's a heck of a day!!!!

Yeah. I only caught one dink. 6 or 7 fish in the 5-8 lb. range. A couple of 2-3 pounders, then they turned off. All in about an hour in the hottest part of the
day.
