I just took a 4-day flyfishing trip recently,
which afforded me the opportunity to fish multiple rods in a compressed time-window;
meaning I was able to compare/contrast things more than normal.
When using my Diamondglass 8'0" 3/1 5wt. rod,
I really came away feeling that it was just too "whippy",
and had to really concentrate to cast-out more than 30ft. or so,
or things really fell apart.
Today, I decide ti line it up with a DT4F,
and give it a try on the lawn, and boy what a difference.
The rod still loaded-up well with just a short length of line out,
but felt much crisper @ the 30'-50' range than it ever did with a 5wt.
My question is:
Does anyone else feel this way about this rod?
(not that it'll change my perceptions, but I'd be curious if I have any peers on the issue...)
I've read lots here about it being a "true five weight",
and not much, if any I can remember to the contrary.
I can't imagine how folks fish streamers with this rod?
It's is just so buttery soft, especially in the upper 1/3 of the blank,
my take on this rod, is that it's really better suited for dries,
and delicate presentations. But maybe that's just me?
Also, I'm left wondering if my rod is somehow different?
Like maybe Diamondback QA/QC slipped a little when this rod was constructed?
I'm just having trouble reconciling how my impressions could be so different than some others who own this same rod.
Heck, I might ever try a 3wt. on it, if I had one!
Now I really want to compare my rod side-by-side with the 2pc. 8'0" 4wt.
Would be interesting to do so...
