Nice reels... you don't see them too often. You should decide soon on that striper line, the season has started... we got them in the LIS... all the
regular spots. Went out in the boat yesterday, five over 18#, with "gorilla blues" in the mix. I'll be starting my nighttime shore patrol soon.
Here's my best fish 'on the fly' from shore, taken June 1, 2008... in three feet of water. 42" / 29#... graphite rod, but will be fishing
glass in the this year.

Fred thanks for the compliment on the reels and the heads up on the striper action. I have actually been out fishing for stripers already. I am just putting together a new reel setup. Below is a picture of a nice fish I caught last Wednesday on a classic graphite Orvis Clearwater 8wt. I think the Warwick will work on that rod well.

Nice fish, Jeff... I fish from NJ to RI... the bunker is pretty thick now inside NY area, good fish moving. We should see the sandeels erupt real soon.
I'll be fishing a Fisher GT40 graphite or a Fenwick FF9010 with a Medalist 1496-1/2... might see you out there. I get around! -Fred

Both reels are very cool, can you provide a shot of the innards for both. I've never seen that model Warrick before, and although I've seen similar Ross reels, I've never seen one with that design for a tension regulator. Thanks for sharing ! Jeff, that Warwick Royal is really interesting. My brother-in-law lives in West Warwick, RI so I'll have to keep an eye out for those when I'm up
there. I wonder when they were made?

Mark I shot these pics quick this morning but didn't have time then for the insides. I will try to get those up in a couple of days which according to the NWS is the next time we will see some sun in the morning 
I think the drag on the Ross will stop a Tuna so it should be fine on the stripers I plan to use it on. I just need to get the drag direction adjustment straight in my head so I don't over tighten during a run. Counter clockwise looking down tightens. |

As you already are aware, I also have a Warwick "Royal". Mine is silver with a clear finish, Cornmuse has an excellent article on the history of these reels on his web site. He thinks mine maybe a proto type reel, as the production reels were anodized green like yours. He had a "Striper" model which he graciously returned to the family. The only thing I had to do was clean(Bulldog bath) and lubricate the reel. The drag system needed to have the cork piece on the adjustable drag refurbished. I am really interested in the internals of your reel, would love to see a photo. As to how it fishes, all I can say is, it's a simple uncomplicated reel with a real drag system, that I use in NorCal saltwater. Here are some photos    
I have landed fish to 10# with this reel and really enjoy using it. Nice score on a rare classic, a late 40's - early 50's reel built to fish the salt. Respectfully rvreclus |

I will have to look at mine to see if there is anything. I thought it was just metal to metal but also thought that wouldn't be very smooth. Thanks for adding those pictures. The internals on my reel look indentical to your Royal right down to the wear mark on the inside of the spool except mines a little more noticable with the green anodizing. I got the Ross lined up and ready to go tonight and found a line for the Royal. That will get lined up soon...

Just got around to shooting a couple pics of the inside of the Ross this morning. Actually was able to fish the reel over the weekend though I didn't get a chance to test the drag on a fish. Happened to have a copy of Lefty Krehs Fly Fishing Saltwater 2nd edition and noticed while perusing the chapter on reels this was one of about a dozen reels he recommended at the time. The others were well known classics such as Billy Pate, Fin nor, Seamaster etc. The only adjustment in using the reel for me was adjusting to the spool rotating a bit during casting if the spool wasn't on one of the drag detents on the cog mounted on the back of the spool.

I've owned one of those Ross reels for a number of years. Mine was sold through Thomas & Thomas, and has their logo and their "Trophy" model
designation instead of the Ross decoration and SN. A fine reel that has worked well for bonefish for me, and should give you excellent service. Very well made!

I have now landed a number of large striped bass with this reel and the drag and reel have performed smoothly and am extremely happy with it. This fish was caught off cape cod (in the fog) Friday with a chartruese popper. It went 38.5 inches with a 18 inch girth. *edit-found out it weighed 18.25lbs.

I've always wondered why people extolled Ross reels. On the surface they are quite plain looking but, after seeing the internals I understand. The beauty is hidden within, I can't imagine what could break the drag system on that reel it looks bullet proof! It sure looks like it's serving you well. Wayne |

WOW- really cool reels and awesome striped ones. I have not been able to get out in the salt all year, but love to hit the surf with glass 7/8wt in hand. Also,
I am always on the lookout for older surf capable reels and that ROSS is killer! I would love to get my hands on an older SA System 2 with the solid frame- no
holes. Those look to be built like tanks as well.
