what is your opinion of alignment dots on rods? What do you use for the dots? How do you affix them? and cover them after?Lots of questions i know, but I
just fell off a turnip truck!!!!!

If I use them I use either my gold or silver pilot marker extra fine point between the second and third dried coat of CP on the final wraps. Then after the CP
seals it in I use varnish as normal to finish the wraps. Works well with just a dot from an old fashioned scripting pen and acrilic scripting ink in white as
well. Again make sure its sealed with CP before you finish over it or it will or could streak and run with your top coat depending on what your using. For my
personal rods I dont do it, for those I make to sell or give away I do.

I've only used them once on a rod I built. It was my last rod build, a 6'6" 2wt 4pc. There are no guides on the butt section and I decided to not
include a hook keeper. This made it a little more difficult to line the butt section up and I don't like sighting over the reel to do this. Personal
preference. So I used some 3/16 inch pieces of red flashabou for marks.
Here's the build (graphite rod warning The tube top:

Most builders I know use feather inlays for the marks. |

I only use them on 3 or 4 piece rods. I don't think they are all that necessary but, I do think they add that little something special to the rod. A lot of folks are using Jungle %$+* feathers for their alignment marks. They look really nice. I use Testor's metallic gold model paint. Dip a toothpick in the paint and just touch the blank. It will make a perfect little dot on the blank. Then
I apply a coat of Flex Coat over it to protect it. If you do the paint over wraps make sure you have a coat of finish on the wraps or the paint will bleed.

I like them particularly on rods with metal ferrules. Those ferrules have to be pushed straight together without twisting. So, it can be a pain to get the
guides aligned properly.

What bassackwards said. I like them in general, it makes assembly easier--and I need all the help I can get
I've added some to mine, a dot of enamel allowed to dry, covered by a dot of varnish.

I have put them on my "factory" 4 piece graphite rods...just a small dot of Testors gold model paint like Pemmel. For me it is a convenience for
quick assembly of a 4 piece. I like the way some of you have figured out cool ways to put the mark under the varnish with feather.
