1495 - What would yo do? |

I just snagged this gorgeous 1495 for a song...ok, ok $54 but way less than I ever expected. It's never been lined, has the steel drag plate vs. nylon and
the box is stamped 1948. I've always wanted to get a 1494 or 1495 in mint condition and give it the OnePfoot treatment like "dman" did with his
1494. However, now that I have this old girl in my hands I'm having second thoughts. I'm leaning more towards leaving it as is with the exception of
a drag plate from Bill to make it a lefty and also a counter balance. What to you all think.....Thanks, Rich

You know what I did but here's what someone with considerations similar to yours did...
"I stumbled across a NEW IN THE BOX 6 rivet 1494. It didn't get the round line guard or the new handle, but I did get everything else for it. I didn't want to permanently alter such a rare find, and kept the original parts so it could be restored to original condition." |

Get the One Pfoot drag plate and possibly the reel foot if the stock foot doesn't like your intended rod. I've got a bunch of Pfluegers of all ages. I
love to fish them and I have very few problems with fit. But if you do, its a great part that's easy to revert back to stock. Add the counterbalance if you
like the looks, it won't make a big difference in performance unless you're playing with big carp, trout in heavy water or salt water fish. Even then,
I've landed a lot of stripers, redfish, pollock and redfish on my stock 1495's. Having said that, I wouldn't spring for the round line guard,
sculpted pillars and other acoutrements unless I had to have the aesthetics to match a grass or glass rod. Those parts don't affect the performance at all,
but they will fundementally change the look of a mint reel that's waited patiently for half a century to be fished. That's one fine looking reel!

quillg,
You may not even need the drag plate. I don't know about one's of your vintage but you may be able to reverse the existing one's. I think maybe they became convertible in 1959. I've been told if it's not beveled it can be reversed. Let us know if yours is beveled and what you decide to do. |

You can buy good condition USA Pfluegers all day long for less than $30 so that's what I'd get for a full custom treatment. Keep that one stock except
the LHW drag plate. I wouldn't even add a counterbalance, but you could have that on the other reel or a spare spool. When you go to swap the line guard to
the LHW position, make sure you have a good fitting screwdriver so the screw slots aren't gouged--since they are perfect right now.

I gotta float my stick with whrlpool. This reel is so nice that you might want to keep it stock or nearly so. Nice pickup! Catch some nice ones!

The cheapest reel I own, a Beaudex, cost almost twice that. Set it up so you are happy and fish it!

Thanks for all the input folks....I think the right decision is to keep it as is. I will be getting the drag plate though...I've got a couple other right
hand only reels...just can't get used to it. Now all I need is for it to warm up here in the northeast so I can hit the ponds.
