Big Bend-o in the McFarland 5w |
Lead | |
|
We were having Easter dinner at my sisters house today, so before we left, just decided to go over to the park and cast a little bit. First good day in a
while, but didn't have the time to go fishing. So next best thing. Joni caught it perfect I think. Nice bend in the rod don't you think?

That's a flex, I imagine it throws some line.

Nice! A good full flex in that rod. You are right, Joni's photo is perfect. Your form is pretty darned good too! Nice positioning with your hands. It
usually takes me half a season to get them back together where they belong. I always start the season with my left hand floating around near my hip...

Snow's gone. Until Wednesday.
The rod is the 5w Spruce Creek Parabolic. I had a 100' tape measure, on account of another forum where Bill Oyster chucked a 6w bamboo line 100' With the wind blowing, I could only manage 80' longest cast. Average was 70'-75'. Now this is with Sharkskin too. Don't overpower the rod, and it dances by itself. |

Mojo,
You just voided your warranty. Awesome pic. If you are looking for distance with a glass rod stay tuned. I have a Tournament rod in the works. I had the first prototype at the Gathering last month. With a couple changes I think it will easily do 100' plus. I will keep you posted. Love the pic. Keep up the good work. |

The prototype rocks! Mike taped on some guides and a reel and we cast it on Sunday. In Mike's very capable hands, he cast at least 100 feet of line with
it. Bob4st, with his classical casting style was hitting some serious distance with it too. I tried it and threw more line than ever before with any other
rod. Mind you, it was my "once a season" perfectly timed cast, but it sure came at the right time!
With a tournament line, this rod is a casting machine. With a line weight up for more reasonable fishing distances, this rod will be a super smallmouth or big water trout rod. The rod has glass feel with serious power. Tom |

100 feet?????
That's about five casts for me!!!! There's a reason why I hide away in the Frozen Wasteland and fish small steams surrounded by willows with bears to keep the spectators away!!!

Oh heck, if I could cast 100 feet, I'd just get tanled up in something.

mtm905 wrote:Mike, if I let you use the picture, can I have my warranty back? I normally cast for distance in stillwater fishing with sinking lines. I like more of a drop-the-fly-in-front-of-the-fish cast for moving water (with dry flies). That's what I like about this rod. It's great for short casts and to punch it out there. One day I'll get some Teeny line and give that a try. AG, I'll trade 100' for a week in your neck of the woods any time. Of course I'd have to drag FG along |

Mojo-
I bet that FG would hate being forced into that!! I saw some really good air fares between SLC and Anchorage not long ago. |

Darn, I knew I should have taken a camera with me yesterday on the trout stream. I probably caught more 18+ trout than I ever have - and on my McFarland
8' 4wt Spruce Creek. If Mike would have seen how many times the tip of the rod was ready to kiss the butt of the rod, he would have definitely revoked my
warranty! What a bend on those big hogs, but also protected my 6X fluoro tippet attached to a #22 dropper emerger. Yeah, we have an unusual fishery here in
the south where a 'fly fishing only C&R stream 'is directly below a trout hatchery that is always dumping effluent into the river. I've also
observed uneaten pellets floating down river so they must supplemental feed too - although they won't admit it. Trout get fat and happy with the high
nutrients and there's an incredible amount of large wild bows and browns that are in that area. They do take exception, though, to being hooked.....
