Todays Orvis reels made in England? |
Lead | |
|
I was looking at the Orvis web site last night at the traditional CFO and the Battenkill and noticed that there was not a stamp 'made in England' on
the reels or any info of where the reels are made now. Has Orvis 'given in' to the dark side for pure monitary reasons? ..........Thanx......Ray.....

They've been made in Korea for a number of years now. If it doesn't say Made In England, then it's not. As I understand it, they sold BFR and moved
all the reel production overseas. I think it's when the bronze color CFO's came into the marketplace. Still well made reels. The one thing is the
overseas reels had a different (larger) reel foot on them. So I guess Hardy and Orvis reels are made in the same region.

Thats what I thought and that is a sad day. The history is what made Orvis with their quality and tradition. What would it cost for the reels to be made in
England? Another 20 bucks a reel? I'd pay that for sure...............Sorry for the sad response fellers but I still can't accept whats happening to my
USA.

Raybow wrote:Ray, just to play the devils advocate, Orvis rods made in Vermont. Reels were made in England. England ain't the USA. So, all in all. If the quality is the same or better. The tolerance's tighter. The reels less expensive,(but better) what's the difference if a reel that was made in England, is now being made in Korea? It's still an Orvis (or Hardy). |

I bought a Mid Arbor and it would not fit the reel seat of an older T3 yet every other reel I own fit the seat perfectly. There are AFTMA standards for reel seats but I don't think they follow them as close as some other reel makers. Rich |

Rich, the bronze reel built in 2003-05 or so was never made in England, this is straight from Orvis customer service. I did hear that some were shipped in
boxes that said Made in England, but it was only written on the boxes. This is the one I'm talking about.

Mojorizing wrote: Hey Mojo, I bought two bronze CFO's marked "made in England" back in early 2004. It was shortly before they moved operations over to Asia. Orvis was clearing out all the reels marked as such to make way for the new Asian made versions. The customer service person is misinformed. You are right though a lot of the Asian versions early on were shipping in boxes that said "made in England". Anyway, here's a pic of a genuine Bronze CFO made at British Fly Reel before the move, I had my friend send a pic of the one I sold him.

I stand corrected. I guess Orvis' customer service needs to bone up on their own history.
We just looked at Joni's bronze CFO and it looks identical to your's except the Made in England is missing. My older grey CFO's are all click pawl so they have a different back and the writing is smaller cursive type writing.

In the back of my mind, I honestly couldn't remember either. I worked for Orvis during the change . I even remember the notice we got telling us we were no
longer having BFR build our reels. I remember the first bronze, but I can't remember exactly when that was. What the heck, they are all made
overseas....LOL

English got this fly fishing stuff going and I like to feel that Americans helped perfect it. I grew up with the skies lit up at night from the steel mills in Pittsburgh and I still think a 66 GTO was the greatest car ever built and it does bother me that best some of our young people have to look forward to is running a burger joint. Thats the difference for me. |
