Secret Fly Rod "Pole" |
Lead | |
|
This poll is to see how many of you have a secret "sleeper" fly rod in your collection that you don't talk up much on this site because of fear
that the prices will go up on ebay before you fill out your own collection... I thought this might be a fun poll.
Do you have a secret glass bargain rod... (Result) |

Well, I did sort of have a sleeper, then I let the cat out of the bag.

saw one go recently for three times what I paid and I tell you I would gladly pay that amount for another. Don't need another tho.

I've a couple that worked out really well with some judicious guide placement when rebuilt, FF4GT and others have noted the same. There are some rods out there that were cheaply built on pretty good blanks and some that fail the beauty test, but pass all others.

I paid $107 for the MF70 that started me down a slippery slope.
the rods are never obsolete - the marketing is.

Naw if I find a hidden jewel I usually spill the beans, they are just to good to not share with your friends, my recent introduction to the H & I 1200 is a
good example. Ive been watching them or for them for years, all of a sudden half a dozen have poped up on ebay recently. Think I picked up the first two
luckily. They were I think the first Glass UL flyrods ever being introduced in 1953. A true 3wt with a DT and awsome with a WF4wt, I have no idea what kind of
fly lines they were built for in 1953. But I opened the bag here in this forum, and Ive seen a couple of members pick them up with similiar reports back about
them. So Im glad I let the cat out of the bag, I would prefer seeing our glasshead members pick everyone of them up before they start leaving the country
forever.
The little Harnell 1800 and Phillipson mighty light are two other examples of glass lightweights that are little talked about and yet predate most of the stuff put out in the late 60s and 70s when we talk about glass rods. I hope our members pick up every one of the little jewels. Richard |

Hi All;
Most here know what mine is, I don't talk about it any more in this forum due to the increased interest and subsequent price going up on ebay. Waynebh |

Really nothing I been trying to keep a secret. Maybe it would be different if I did e-bay, but all my glass rods I've either bought here or at flea
markets, or while in production. I've got a couple I like that seem a little underappreciated, but I have learned so much here that I've never felt the
desire to keep from talking about those, or any rods, on this site.
Until now. Bob |

I don't have enough experience with glass rods to have a "secret", but I've benefitted from two previous posters in this thread
"spilling the beans" in the past about their favorites. But don't worry... I won't say too much, WayneBH.

No secrets here...but I certainly have enjoyed picking up tips on fly rods and other gear from everyone here.

I enjoy talking to y'all about rods and other tackle, and I don't hold back thoughts just to keep the prices low. There is a market value ceiling at
some point; if not, Fenwicks would eventually sell for $500+ based on the number of Fenwick posts on this forum!
It's true that rod prices do seem to creep up as they're talked about, but that's not a bad thing in my opinion. The flip side of the coin is that the values of rods already in hand will go up as well. I give y'all permission to talk 'em up! [Just make sure I already have one first.] |

I guess I used to have a secret one. About 6 years or so ago, I purchased a Mint unfished Fenwick Ferrulite 535 for $35.00. Now look at how much they go for on
EvilBay.

Hi ToneMike;
Aren't you holding one? If it's what I think it is, that 's the model of rod I don't talk about openly anymore. I joined this site in October of 2006 and one day I looked at some of the earlier postings and was stunned what people used to pay for some of the rods that now go for over $200.00 and up. Same for some of the reels mentioned on this site. Waynebh |

It's not from Ebay, but a rod that I bought recently with which I am very impressed is the Great Bay Northeast. I purchased the four piece 7' three
weight rod for $279.99 including shipping to Alaska.
I think that the craftsmanship of the rod is very good. I prefer the rod's appearance over my Lamiglas Spring Creek, Diamondglass, and Scott Fibertouch. It seems like the tip is a little stiffer than many of my other fiberglass rods. In comparing it to the three piece 7' three weight Scott rod, the Scott rod tip is softer. It will be interesting to fish the Great Bay rod to see how it feels. If the rod fishes as good as it looks, I'd say it is a very good rod, especially for the price. If I like the way it fishes I'll be adding another rod when they add new longer rod lengths to their line. I plan on taking the rod to the Smokys in May to try it out. |

My Para/Metric. A $31 rod on ebay, with original bag and tube, in excellent almost unused condition, made in Spirit Lake, Iowa. Not the Taiwan model.
