I like single foot guides, particularly on lighter rods. I feel they get the line up off the blank a little more. When the line is wet, sometimes it clings to the blank. I feel this is lessened with single foot guides. Like much to do with guide choice, placement, alignment, and aesthetics, my opinions are closer to religious belief than actual reality. I believe they work - therefore they do. I've never seen well designed experiments that prove or disprove any of it.

With respect to building the rod, I like the single foots too. Guide prep is a draw. While there is only one foot to prep, usually the single foot guides are not as well formed as snake guides. Wrapping a single foot is definitely easier, even if you use a Forhan wrap (see this rodbuilding.org article by Rich Forhan for details). I've seen enough missing snake guides that I don't think there is a big difference in durability either. I suppose with the reduction in weight and wraps, you could add one more guide to a rod and still come out ahead.
