I suppose you could ask Tom Morgan or Glenn Brackett to confirm or clarify your question. There are probably few people still at Winston who were there since the beginning of the glass era.

I'd be interested to know as well. I have 2 Winston rods without inscriptions.

1) A 7'6" 4 wt 3 pc built off of a Stalker blank (Fisher blank with white spigot ferrule). The original builder inscribed the length and line rating. Obviously, not a factory rod.

2) A 7'6" 4 wt (?) 4 pc SF-era rod. Unfortunately, it's missing its tip section () so I've never cast it, but Glenn Brackett is going to fashion a non-Fisher glass tip for it when I get the rod to him. Eyeballing its taper/diameter to a Winston 7'6" 4 wt and a 7'6" 5 wt, it sure does look like a 4 wt. I spoke with a fellow at Winston Repairs about it, and he believes it to be a "special order" factory rod as everything else about it is to factory spec.

Are your rods in question SF or MT era rods? If they are SF era rods, it's possible that they are factory made without inscriptions. In my experience, there seems to be less standardization with the SF glass rods compared to the MT rods, even between my 3 SF rods.

1) SF 7'6" 4 wt 4 pc: half wells, BAKELITE screw DL, NO inscription, silver decal, SPLIT RING folding hook keeper, factory green plastic "pop-top" cap/tube

2) SF 7'6" 5 wt 2 pc: half wells, SILVER alum. screw DL, inscription (length, line rating), silver decal, wire hook keeper, factory aluminum screw-top tube

3) SF 8'6" 6 wt 3 pc: half wells, GOLD alum. screw DL, inscription (length, line rating, WEIGHT/OZ.), GOLD decal, wire hook keeper, factory green screw-top tube

Options of identity of "no-inscription" rods: kit rod, special order factory rod, factory rod without inscription

When I send Glenn my 7'6" 4 wt 4 pc in the future, I'll ask him what he thinks about the absence of inscription issue.

zimfly, do your rods without inscriptions have factory decals/labels? What are the rods' configurations (length, line, etc.)? Do they match up to any of the rods in Tom Morgan's list of SF rods?

If they don't have labels, they're custom rods built off of factory blanks.

If they do have labels, as well as having factory-style components, they are factory rods without inscriptions. If it's a rod not mentioned in the list above, it may be a factory, special order rod.
