Installing ferrules |
Lead | |
|
I'm about to install ferrules on a fiberglass rod I'm about to build. The female ferrule fits on the bottom section perfectly. The male ferrule does
not fit on the tip section at all...if fact the diameters appear to be exactly the same. What are my options? ps....I'm also thinking of doing a spigot
ferrule instead.

I'm a little confused still. I take it you have cut a glass blank in two and are installing metal ferrules? Is the male ferrule too big for the tip
section (sloppy fit)? or too small (tip won't fit into the ferrule)? What brand of ferrules are you using?

Yes the blank was cut into a two piece...the tip section will not fit into the male ferrule. the ferrules are brass chrome plated from mudhole. the rod is
being built for a tadpole swap i'm in....I'm also looking at possibly doing a spigot ferrule.

If I understand what your problem is; I have fitted the ferrules that are too large by wrapping thread on the blank, and fitting it with that technique; you
have to build the thread up where the end of the ferrule meets the rod so as to ease the transtion between the rod blank and the ferrule when youre wrapping
the ferrule. I have taken off old ferrules where this technique was used on some old glass rods-p-

the problem is that the male ferrule is too small to fit onto the blank....

I see. I suspect you got a set of ferrules were the male has a smaller ID than the female. Check this link to the specifications page for American Tackle ferrules (the
Mudhole supplier). Some ferrules indicate the male and female are the same ID and a few indicate the male is smaller. You may wish to get a set sized for the
male ferrule and then shim the female as Pearow suggests.
If you are looking to do a spigot ferrule instead, I would recommend getting a second blank and using it for the ferrule stock. That way the internal taper should be correct. Tom |

How close is the male ferrule to fitting? Could it be just a matter of trimming a tad off the blank? If you have any calipers mic it out and see if that would
work.

Just a thought, when I am dealing with automotive press fit pieces, heating them creates quite a bit of expansion. You might try heating the male ferrule a
bit, and certainly sanding a few thousands off the blank would be an option too.

Hello
Very interesting post we got going here. Johns suggestion of a bit more of a trim sounds like the best advice. I wouldn't recommend heating the ferrules to fit though too much can go wrong. Are you planning on reinforcing the blanks under these metal ferrules ? If so the suggestion of a second blank sounds like a good plan for either spigots or ferrule reinforcement. Also it might be a good idea to have one around if you decide to start removing material from th O.D. Personally I would have left the rod a one piece and not had to deal with the action robbing ferrules. Good luck , I am sure you will learn from this experience ! thanks....I've decided to go with spigot ferrules...I've fit the spigot ferrule to the blank....I'll post pictures...Old Yankee...thanks it's
definitely a learning process and I learn something new with each rod that I build.
