Fly Line Recommendation Please |
Lead | |
|
I am very unfamiliar with fiberglass rods but I just ordered 2 of the Lamiglas honey colored fly rod blanks. For me a 7'6" 2pc 4wt and for my 16 year
old son an 8' 2pc 5wt. I will be using a Cortland Sylk on the 4wt but I am looking for line advice on the 5wt as my son has never fly fished before. Obviously, I will be looking for something that loads the rod easily and does not discourage his learning
to cast. My first thought was a SA Trout in a WF configuration. What do ya"ll think? Thanks,
Lonnie

My choice would be a Cortland 444 peach line in DT5. I also like the cheap SA Air Cel DT5

He will be happy with a DT5 or even a WF6F line.

Orvis makes a Clearwater line thats slightly wieght forward for beginning casters, is supple, and is often On Sale at the Orvis store for like $19, its a
visible Optic Yellow so its easy to track when your watching the line for learning purposes, Todd

the lines mentioned above have been around a long time, especially the Cortland lines. I would go with the 444 peach or even a Cortland 333 line. Decades of
use must mean something. The Jim Teeny First Cast lines (60') are excellent for $25.00. They ship quickly from Oregon. I have several of these.
Cortland 444 peach Cortland 333 Scientific Anglers AirCel Scientific Anglers Ultra 3 or 4 Can't say as to DT or WF. I never notice the difference. SOme advice, tell you son that distance is not the goal, but rather his technique. Distance will come down the road. Most fish are caught close in. Paul |

Thanks for all the advice guys! I really appreciate it. With regard to WF vs DT, I don't see much difference either. Out to about a 50' cast they
are identical and most of our fishing will be on smaller water where casts of that distance are rarely needed. I guess some of my confusion is in reading
manufacturers descriptions of their lines, which tend to cater to the graphite rod user and faster rods. I'm fishing a Cortland Sylk and Classic peach
right now on my bamboo rods and it sounds like those would be fine on his fiberglass rod as well. Once I get these rods built I think some experimentation out
on the lawn will be in order. Thanks again...

The Teeny "First Cast" is a great line for beginners and is ideal for smaller waters.
I also second the recommendation for the Orvis Clearwater for beginners/smaller waters. |
