Weather, and water conditions seem to create short periods when a good short (4ft for under 5wt) and 10ft for heavier lines, like 5-6-7wts seems to be ideal. I fish them alot here on the Kern in winter. For me the water flow is slow and river still wide in the places Im fishing near home. Depth is around 4-5 ft for the pocket water where the fish are holed up, the drifts and bars are often just a couple of inches deep this time of year, so I can work down right in the middle without distrubing the fish, placing my nymphs and midges and a few micro beadhead buggers right into those litle pockets, yet pickup the line for another cast without picking up half the river, at this point of time alot of ripples would make a difference.
during pre washout spring flows and way up river where washout isnt a problem I like full sinking lines, and change to high density ones III and faster, coupled with lead core Bearthooth sinking braided tapered leaders to work with my medium sized 6-12 nymphs and streamers.
As has already been mentioned the sinking tip lines work well springtime here as well down river from the dam in controlled flow rate riffle water where we have a great small mouth bass fishery as well.
I think its one of our fun subjects, the varity and use of the various fly lines we can use to make flys do what we want.
If your not in real fast moving water, don't foget the little indicator float or fluff, it will improve your observation of the take far better than trying to watch the naked line.
