Favorite line for the McFarland Spruce Creek 8 foot - 5 weight? |
Lead | |

Reading through the threads I see many people praising the McFarland Spruce Creek in the 8 foot, 5 weight configuration.
To the owners of this rod...what are your favorite fly lines for this rod? J.C. |

TSII and Gold from Rio work for me. Quite well.
I want to go Sharkskin for my 5w and I'm thinking that wouldn't hurt one bit. Got a 4w Shark and love it on my glass 4w's Sharkskin GPX |

caddissfly...I like a Cortland Sylk 5DT on mine...but I am sure that most 5DT's would feel just fine on it.

I know that Mike McFardland used Wulff Triangle Taper lines when he's testing and designing rods. You can use any appropriately weighted line, but the tt
is his reference.

I am getting close to ordering one of these 5wts myself. What model does everyone have? Spruce Creek Dry? Parabolic?
Thanks! - Pete |

My Spruce Creek, of which I have two, is not line fussy at all. Fine, fine rods they are. Depending which reel I use - Teeny First Cast, Cortland Sylk,
Cortland 444 Lazerline, Hook & Hackle Hi-Floater, Scientific Anglers Ultra...

All sounds good to me ... I have a 7'9" 3piece 5wt on order with Mike and plan to use a TT 5wt Line and a SYLK 5wt line with it. Yippee !

I ordered an 8' #5 in March, 2008. It's not done yet, but after speaking with Mike and Cameron I bought an Airflo DT5. My question; which reel gets the
DT5? I'm NOT worried about aesthetics. I'm not fishing for show. I'm fishing for trout! I want what would balance at the first ring to tip of the
grip. Fish one? What reel are YOU using? I have a grey SA System 1; Hardy LRH; Abel TR2 and Abel TR3 to choose from. Any suggestions as to what I should try
first? Thanx, SD

scud dog...you know I've been rocking a couple of different J. W. Young reels on mine...but I would bet that you'll end up with an Abel on yours.
Actually...Mojorizing has his eight foot five weight McFarland build paired with a Hardy reel...and it looked like a great match...

Reel for Spruce Creek | ||
|
I purchased this rod late last fall and I am looking forward to using it this spring. I was looking for a reel to compliment the fine looks of the rod and was
hoping to use an gold Airex 371 I have but the foot is too thick for the Presentation Grade hardware on my rod. I was thinking about purchasing one of the
copper color #2 Ross Rhythm's from Sierra Trading Post. Since I don't own a Ross reel, does anyone know if the reel foots on their reels would be thin
enough to fit my rod?
Thanks for your help |

PolishSteel,
Welcome to the Fiberglass Flyrodders! It sounds like you have a good start for your fiberglass rod arsenal. Most fly reel and reelseat makers adhere to the AFFTA standard for reel foot dimensions. Unfortunately, the standard is a modern one so classic reels like Youngs, Airexs, and Medalists don't conform. But any Ross reels that I have handled appear to have properly dimensioned reel feet. An Abel TR2 would be another one to consider if you like black... Tom |
