I have a heddon 8', 2/1 rod that I need a price on, its been in my shop to long and needs a new home. The rod is marked as follows: Heddon Pal Black Beauty #75- 8' D or E "Bill Porter" This rod has been fished but has no issues, the wraps are black with orange tipping and I've put an overcoat of varnish on each. The ferrules are black and metal so I would guess the rod should date to the 60's. The rod comes with a mint orig. bag and an orig. metal tube with a good label. The tube cap is the type that has a rubber "washer" that expands when you turn the ring at the top. Much the same as I have with a model 50 and a model 35, these are cane. I'm thinking of putting it on ebay but I need some idea where to start it. Bruce

The early Heddon glass was a pretty full flex rod. If you aren't looking to win a distance casting competition, these rods can be fun to fish. Price on the early Heddons is usually all over the map. I've seen them run from $20 up to $100. In some respects, you might get more money by selling the tube separately from the rod. I would start it at $40 and hope at least two bidders want it. Or you can offer it on the For Sale board here. Tom

I think to sell the tube alone would be a mistake. I didn' know you had a sale board, I'll look for it, I'd rather the rod stay with people that would use and care for the rod. I don't know much about fiberglass rods although I do fish one every now and then. And this rod is rather nice, I'd also give a 3 day inspection period with no questions asked. (Answer and it's 6. Answer again, and it's 7 . . . ) BTW, I have a 7'6" Heddon Thorobred - 55 Trout that's probably from roughly the same vintage. It's a nice, relaxed 5 wt., and roll casts very well. I understand about wanting to get a good rod into hands that will use it, I need to do the same with a couple, but there's also something to be said for keeping something around that's just a little different from the rest of your quiver. I'll keep this one, even though I'm sort of focusing on multi-pieces. Bob

I was wondering if my time on Clarks board would allow me to sell here? I've been a member of Clarks for over 6 years and have over 1100 posts. As to keeping a rod around thats somewhat different, thats not a problem as I've been restoreing cane since the 60's, most of my rods date from the mid 1870's to about 1920's. I've never fished this Heddon rod as I fish with cane or graphite 99 % of the time. I would like this rod to go to someone that will fish it, it needs to get more time out of its tube. Bruce

An 8ft 5/6 weight would be a nice rod, and would draw some interest I'm sure. Is Bill Porter the name of a previous owner?? (Reply and it's 8 posts, almost there!) Keith

As to your question of who Bill Porter was, I have no idea, it looks very much like a factory marking to me. Very much in line with the rest of the factory script. Off subject, I've found more information about reels on this board than others I've looked at. Should I ever need help again with fiberglass rods I know just where to come. By the way, do I have to join this board as a member and if so, how do I do that? Bruce

By the way, for an auction I would start the rod at $40 expecting it to sell higher. A for sale offering I would start a bit higher. Tom
