Beautiful, Ron. Put your gunsmithing screwdriver in the photo--whoops, there it is--and it would be perfect.

Probably won't be here for awhile, but we will have some check photos to blow us all away with that one - the pawl is at 90-degrees - the drag gear is a crown gear http://clarksclassicflyro...ardy-fly-reel-papers.html Steve, I was using it anyway - I cropped out the handle.

yeah... i bit the bullet yesterday.
I was sitting in homeroom (I teach 8th grade) and on Channel One (its a news service for middle and high schools all over the country) they were talking about the British pound taking a beating. I figured if the pound was at a point where it was newsworthy for 15 year olds, it's gotta be pretty low. I was very happy trading $228 american dollars (shipped) for one of these reels. How long are you guys waiting until arrival? -matt |

What the pick for an 8ft 4wt -- Lightweight or LRH?

A Featherweight will just fit a DT4 with only a base wrap of backing.

A buddy of mine has one of those Golden Prince reels. Wacky drag but it seems to work fine. Any other reels with that kind of check on it?

Tom,
I believe that you have the only pics on the 'net that show the internal guts of the Casc. 2/3/4. Thanks! |

Here's a question: how loud are the new Cascapedia's? I'm sure it won't get past the daydream stage, but I'm starting to think my ideal
outfit would be a Cascapedia hung on a Yellow Fenwick Continental Tourer. The only reason I need a drag in the first place is to prevent free spooling, and it
doesn't do to startle the bears. (They hate being startled this time of year.

Not very - but I don't know how much it takes to startle a bear.
Sounds like a good daydream. You never know. |

The Cascapedia is way too heavy for a Continental tourer, IMO. It's a 6-oz. reel, and I've been through several rods to try fit, and so far, it's
best on my 8' 4-oz. cane. It's just a touch heavy for my Quiet Loop VF805, but I believe I will use it there, anyway.
The Cascapedia is very quiet, but you might consider an LRH Lightweight. Jim, only the Prince series reels have that check. And I'm not offended, doc, but I'm Ron - jgestar is Tom.

C-Bear,
I'm thinking a 6oz. reel may be right for that rod, especially when you factor in the short grip. We've seen Cameron's pics of his with a Young (that's a good choice too). I use a 3" Stuart on my "Triple Apple". Nice balance and they look really good on those rods! |

Thanks for the feedback, guys...Bulldog's right, at 6 oz., that's a chunk of metal, but then the 5-piece Fenwicks seem pretty substantial themselves.
I think Cameron's rolling with a 3 1/4" Beaudex on his Japanese Fenwick, so maybe he'll chime in. As for "startling bears," I'm not
sure about the tipping point, either, but I'd rather err on the side of caution...

a 3-1/4" Beaudex is almost exactly the same weight as a Cascapedia, and a Pridex is only a hair lighter. So maybe I'm under-estimating the weight of the rod. I also know Cam has mentioned he likes his rod balance to be a touch reel-heavy.

Jon,
Not sure if the Cascapedia has undergone any changes (I vs. II) since I last handled one at Jonas', but I agree it's pretty quiet for an Hardy. It had the sweetest ticking sound and a very nice action. The 2/3/4 reel is very tempting, but at 6.5 oz, I too am concerned about its balance on shorter 4wt glass rods. The Fenwick Continental Tourer at 7'3", 4wt, 5pc, 2.6oz might be better matched with ~5oz reel. |

The Mk I is a very different reel: the original with solid (not ported) ebonite side plates.
Every Cascapedia we are likely to handle are Mk II reels. They did not change the design of the reel when they moved manufacturing to Korea. (maybe I'm assuming, maybe you did handle a Mk I, but I believe also believe all the Mk Is were salmon sized) I would want a 4-5oz reel to balance a 2-1/2 oz rod. I sold it yesterday, but a 3" Beaudex or Pridex would be just right, IMO
I love fishing these on my 7' Phillipsons.

RonMc, John--
Thanks for elaborating--I've been in the process of consolidating my meager rod collection in favor of finding a "Goldilocks" set-up. Lots to think about... |

Well...I'm just showing up late to all kinds of good discussions today. HA...
With the Continental Tourer I started out with a little three inch Young Pridex that I matched to the rod more for how it looked over how it made the rod feel. I ended up cutting a Japanese taper AirFlo Ridgeline fly line in half...which I now regret. At the "Dirty South Clave" Creationbear suggested a larger/slightly heavier reel might be a better match.
Once I got my mind around his idea I ended up finding a Young made Edgar Sealey that really evened all the kinks in this fly rod...and I just can't say enough good about it now. It casts beautifullly...and has the ability handle sizeable quarry.
Creationbear...just place your order already! The Yen and the GBP go back to their advantage. |
