i shouldn't have looked... |

as some of you know, i've been trying to thin out my rod closet. i've sold, traded and given several away over the past 6 months. well, i was working
in portland yesterday so i thought i'd stop by to meet dwight lyons and see his shop. aside from being a great rod builder (F.D. Lyons rods), dwight's
a great guy. so here's the problem. i decided to look at the glass rods he was getting rid of. i'm sure you can see where i'm going here. he had a
near mint 8' kurt gowdy - parametric. magic wrench has said it before, but man, that parametric is surprising light in the hand. after handling that sucker
in his basement for a few minutes, i had to buy it. you start looking at nice stuff too closely and it's pretty tough to walk away. i'm not that
strong! i'm not sure if my berkley 540 reel is heavy enough to balance it properly, but i am looking forward to finding just the right reel and line. so
much for being frugal and thinning out my collection.

I disagree Mike, looking is a very natural, normal thing for a man to do, as long as you don't stare, drool etc
you're gonna like that PM, nice rods. They will carry a mile of line in the air. Ok not a mile, but you get the idea. Me, I have a "rule" now, everytime I buy one I have to sell one. Working out fine so far. Keith |

this could be dangerous. I live only a hundred miles from Lyon's shop.

You made an excellent choice that is one of the rods in my collection I wouldn't sell.

I visited the Scott Fly Rod factory today, which is located in my hometown, to have them look at a Sage SFL glass rod of mine.
While I was waiting a few minutes to talk to someone from repairs, I looked around their lobby and drooled over some of the early S.F. yellow glass rods they had on historical display. I'm not a huge Scott rod fan in general, except for a thing I have for an early brown glass 7'0" 3 wt; but after looking at the encased rods, I started wanting an early yellow-glass rod. Ignorance, if not bliss, often saves a lot of money. |

majicwrench wrote: hey keith, the problem is, i drool AND stare. and i'm still staring and i own the darn thing now...it's very shiney. i'm always amazed when you find a sweet 20+ year old rod that hasn't been fished. i don't get it. do you like your parametrics OK with heavily weighted nymphs and streamers? and if so, what lines do you like best on the 8 footer? i'll probably sell a few more rods that don't get their fair share of use to ease my conscience. |

Those 8fters are really 6/7's. If I am gonna be casting dries, small hoppers or nymphs, I'll string it with a DT or WF 6wt. If I'm using buggers or
bass bugs I'll go with a WF7. Line brands isn't anything I take into consideration, I have a cobled assortment of mostly very well used lines.
These 8ft PM's are not cannons, like say a FF807, which is a much heavier rod that is very commfortable with an 8wt, and so they are not as happy with real heavy stuff. Course when I talk about "heavy" I think about bull trouting with a fly that weighs, well, a lot. Have fun, Keith |

Congratulations on the rod.
If it is the same as a PD40, 8', 3 1/4 oz -- although it is rated for a #7 line, I like a 6DT. Dennis |

I finally have the rods I have been looking for and I needed to buy a Gheenoe, motor and trailer so I could use them better...
Is this a great country, or what? Donny |

Mike, Did you get any idea how busy Dwight is ? Does he have lots of orders to be filled for glass rods ?

And to think I used to work at a shop on Foster and 101st in Portland, a stones throw from Dwight's place (probably better for my wallet that I didn't
know he was around the corner). Congratulations on your purchase !

Mike,
I spoke to Sam on the phone the other day and his wife Brenda took my order to ship some parts. Sorry to hijack your thread but its good to know there is someone out there who knows what these can do. During the winter I use mine to slip through the Choctawatchee River swamp and pick off squirrels in the trees. All the while noting good bream flyfishing spots for future reference. Donny |
