A new acquisition, which I believe is a Young made reel. It is 3 1/2" diameter, very narrow spool, with a tension regulator, single check.
This reel seems to have been well cared for and enjoyed by it's previous owner (s).

show us the inside - I'd like to see the style of the tensioning block - thanks

More photos....the interior has a coating of grease -- seems to be a common maintenance method used by some.
Is this reel what is called a "highly contracted" reel in the catalogs? It is interesting how much more worn the finish appears when photographed with a flash. Any thoughts/comments appreciated. Dennis

that's a reel from the 20s with that style of tensioning block - show here on a Young perfect from the early 20s
here is the reel that got me started on all of this, about the same as yours, and was sold as a "Dingley" by one of the best-known collectors/dealers in the UK 8 or so years ago.
that was when I started comparing the makers styles to sort the real difference between who made it and who sold it. the lights were turned on when I found this export reel from New Zeland. I thought I would write a book until I found out about Rupe Atwood and in correspondence with him, learned his book would be based on a complete set of the Young wholesale catalogs. So I kept my pen shut to keep from making a dumb mistake in print. I'll eventually figure out what to write, and have the time to do it right, as well.

dennis...wonderful little reel. That handle looks in perfect shape still. I've got to keep my eye on you since you're a "Quiet Collector"
like Bud is.

Hi Mark,
the knob on Dennis' reel is definitely taller (thicker?) - I would say it dates the reel to the earliest end of this reel style. That looks like a perfect ernoid handle on Dennis' reel, which does say its been taken care of.

Ron...I did want to add that it is wonderful to see THE reel that began it all for you...and has started so many of us
on this "Path of Young Reel Madness". HA...

A very nice reel Dennis and I learned a little history thanks for posting it! |

Thanks for all the comments -- is there a publication date for Rupe Atwood's book?
Cameron, there can be a fine line between sharing and appearing to boost, so I try to be reserved. And as you know, too much attention raises the price! Dennis |

yes, Dennis, backing up a bit, this is the "contracted drum" Young pattern. I don't know the pattern number, so I always call them "narrow drum", but it originated some time in the early 20s. It was also the shape they held onto, becoming the postwar exes: 57 Pridex...................................................................................late 20 MC Thornburn

Ron, nice comparison. So sometime between the early 20's and the later 20's the pillars go from flush (as on my reel) with the outer edge to recessed
as shown? I especially like the flush style.

And as you know, too much attention raises the price!Dennis - I'll agree about the posting potentially raising prices, but for the boasting part......I don't perceive it that way, but rather as sharing information and likely learning more about the item from other members that will see and reply, or yes...in some cases decide that they REALLY want one to after seeing the post and then driving the price up Most times when I get a new reel or rod that I think is neat, I'll try and take some good photos and post a thread about the item, and I truly appreciate it when others do so with their new finds. I've said it before, but I live in the midwest and there aren't any big dealers or tackle shows near me, so seeing fine reels in threads like this one is often the closest I'll ever come to seeing one in person. So PLEASE, don't hold back....if you get a good new reel, let's see a little show and tell Thanks ! Mark B |

Dennis, yes that is about as close as we can come on the dates, but that is generally it.
the way the foot recesses on these big diameter reels, makes them look pretty cool on a rod, though

Mark,
If it were not for you, Ron and others on this site and Clark's and their willingness to share, my knowledge of reels would be far less -- so yes, I agree with posting new acquisitions and I enjoy sharing in others excitement of "look what came in the mail today" -- but I also want to be able to add to the knowledge base. I will try not be reticent and will give an occassional outburst.

Dennis, I don't think there's any bragging on this site. Just enthusiasum. When members like you post reels like that, I have to wipe the drool off the
keyboard. It just opens new doors to reels I've never seen before. Look at Cameron's response. I think he had to change his shorts.

Dennis - I would suspect the many viewers of your latest eye candy photo would be thinking....WOW, nice Young Perfect and St G Clone..... but for me there is
something about those early Russells with agate guides that just makes me smile every time I see one
It goes almost without saying that those two Youngs are special reels, but I for one was glad to see the Russell included in the Happy New Year shot Thanks for sharing ! mark B |

dennis...I was just trying to say that there are some on this board that everyone knows have beautiful collections from fishing posts and rod and reel
photos...and then some here that are "Quite Collectors" and we just get a glimpse every now and then. Post away! I enjoy seeing what everyone else
has collected along the way.

Mark,
The early Russell reels are special -- with the twin springs they tune to a really nice sound. Oh, and for times when I feel more black-tie formal....
