Richard, All weight rods. Bring a wide range. For the Bulls you will need something stout, like at least an 8 or 9. Steelhead 6-8. Lots of trout opportunities! I posted links for some shops so you can look for a good local selection.

Been watching this post with interest myself. Trying to figure if I can get away. Being self employed means I usually am working lots of hours about then to
make up for the slowdown at Christmas time. Hoping for the best!

Hi Thom,
Getting caught up from our first big storm set and melt, so what kind/style of gear, full sinking lines? streamer style weighted leaders? sounds like with the size of the bulls a farely heavy tippet attached to a good furrled tapered leader is in order? Would an Intermediate sinking work well? how about a floating line sinking tip style? whats the normal water depth we are trying to target for those Bulls? Im thinking of bringing a 10-11wt, an 8-9wt a 6-7wt and a 4-5wt to cover the road trip up. Hopefully I will run into some coastal salmon and steelhead runs up around the mouths of the Trinity, Klamoth and Rouge on the drive up, so want to bring ample gear to cover the bases. Let me know what line types work best, I want to preload my reels and get some casting practice in this summer so that Im comfortable with the way each rod casts and feels before I leave. Richard |

Richard, I use a 6 foot piece of Rio T-14 looped to my fly line and 3 foot of straight 10lb looped to the T-14. It really gets the fly down, NOW. But any extra
heavy sink-tip will do. Water depth, where the bulls like to hang out, is 4-6 feet. The Metolius has a very strong flow so getting down is the key.

Hi been snowed in with little or none internet, (dialup) worst winter in over 100 years here. Anyway one of the rods Im bringing is a true 7wt, been working on reel/line combinations. Thus far a 7wt Orvis Wonderline generation II sinking compensated III with a beartooth Leadcore braided furrled leader and semi short included tippet seems to take my heavy wets to the bottom in semi fast water, so how fast is the water we are to expect? I can switch to Density compensated V but dont want to get stuck in the river bottom rocks. The Lead core furrled tapered leader really drops the fly with the above line. I can go to an 11 or 12wt rod with the above mentioned Density V type lines for near river washout conditions for Salmon and Steelhead, and I will bring along at least one such rod, so just need to get an idea on exactly what you guys think will work best. Im still planning on being there, any idea what the flow we should expect during our little clave? Richard Been playing with knotted tippets just for this application, 20#-15#-10# so understand your comments

Richard, unless you are going for chinook salmon the 11wt will be over kill. If you were to bring but one rod it would be a 7 wt. Some guys fish for bulls
regularly using a 5 wt. SOmetimes the bulls are clsoe in just a few feet from shore so a lob or a rollcast will do.

Well I am hoping to run into some really big Salmon on the road trip up, have no idea how they have been runnng along the coastal areas. Its been years sense
Ive hooked into over 30 pound Salmon though. Might even run up as far as the Columbia River weather and gas prices allowing. Gas prices have been going crazy
here, its already up to $2.40 a gallon for regular and everytime I get down to go to the store etc its up another $.10 to .25 yet the crude price keeps
falling? something wrong with my math I guess.
Im retired so I most likely will make it a week to two week road trip anyway. Richard |

A Central Oregon fall clave!!!!! Can you say OCTOBER CADDIS" on the Deschutes? I would love to come back to the rivers of my youth. This may just be
doable. How will the Williamson be fishing that late in the year...I have never been there that late. Richard, I have caught dozens of steelhead from the
Deschutes with my FF85 Fenwick....this was 30 years before the Spey rod craze. Also fished the Metolius for bulls with same rod. If you drive up from
California there is some fine fishing in the Shasta area...as I am sure you know...but also just North of Klamath falls near the little town of Chiloquin (Home
of the late Polly Rosborough). Or you can swing to the east near the Steens range and possible hit the Malheur. I am usually roping in the Team Roping National
finals last week of October....but may have to miss it this year if this thing happens.....

Fishing for Bulls with a 5wt is not very sporting or fair to the fish. To land them quickly you will need a 7-8wt. I use an 8 and feel the fight just fine. The
Metolius is a spring fed river so flow is constant all year. The Deschutes should have Steelhead in it and fishing well. I have not been seeing the normal
numbers of Bulls this year but the river has a strong run of Kokanee this fall it should bring more fish up from LBC (Lake Billy Chinook).
Richard I am confident that you will have everything that you need as it sound like you are loaded for bear. |

Well, has anyone decided on a date yet? I have vacation in October, but it's reserved for my Dad's and my yearly salmon trip on the Wynoochee River
here in Washington (well, we do fish the Chehalis, Satsop, and Humptulips as well). I'll have an array of rods I can choose from. Is this a
"glass" clave? Still new here, so wasn't sure if this was a spill over from another board or not. Would love to toss my fenwick flyrods into my
old Eastside and head on down.
Just a steelheader looking for that next hookup. |

Bud, the Williamson is always great but you almost have to hire a guide because of private property.
Chiloquin, eh - Miller Lake for Browns. Anyway, I am in unless I die. THom fishes these waters frequently so I allow that he choose the date. Makes sense to me. Paul |

I am definately looking forward to this clave, I intend to take at least two weeks perhaps more depending on how far north I go. Looking to fish all the great
rivers along the coast from northern Cali to perhaps and including Washington and the ferry to Juno and back. and yes I will be packing 5-12wt lines. Just have
to get my reels and fly boxes packed.

Although I'm new to the board, I would love to take part in this as my job now takes me to Bend, OR about once a month. I'm going to have to get out
and do some exploring in the area ahead of time.

This is something that is open to everyone. It is just an excuse to get a bunch of Glass Heads together and fish/share with each other, right? I think October
is the best month for sure. I would like any input on an exact date. It would be nice if we can make this work for as many as possible. How many are thinking
of camping? This would obviously be the cheaper way to go and I am all for it. As we get closer I would like to get a list together of people that know they
will be attending. We still have alot of time though so no rush and I know alot can happen between now and then. Later, Thom

i'll be camping and i'm bringing my 13yr old son. unfortunately, cheap is more important then comfortable for me. the weekends of the 16th and the 23rd
are best for me. i agree that thom set the date though, since he's been kind enough to invite us to his stomping grounds.

Hi Mike, well being older and this will be my first road trip in a couple of years, Im gonna use nearby motels or cabins warm and snug, with somewhere to eat
nearby for my road trip. You and your son are more than welcome to share my accomodations while Im in the area. Like most Im guessing they will have twin beds
and a rollout available for just about the same cost as a single. Please check on same if you will in the area for me so I can make reservations once we set a
date. Im looking forward to fishing the whole west coast all the way to Juno, haven't done that in quite a few years.

Ok the dates are set. Oct. 23-25th. Let's try to get a list together so I can get a count on how many people are coming. I will be camping and will make
sure we have a good site large enough for all of that will be camping. Richard and anyone else that doesn't want to camp I will get a link to some cabins
that are on the river. I was hoping that we could put in some time on the Lower Deschutes but that may be a little over zealous. Let's see how the Metolius
is fishing and decide from there. There are alot of options in Central Oregon. For those that can bring float tubes/pontoon boats there is a few sweet high
lakes close by that I would seriously like to get you on. One has some nice brookies over a foot long. I am really excited and can't wait to fish with my
fellow Glass Heads. Later Thom
