Give a year to prepair Im in, even if I have to borrow one of Edisons Snow cats to get in. Lets really do it. As long as its above zero Im sure we can do it.
But I won't impose on a member so we need to have a place to stay warm and snug, a central meeting place that has boarding on site or nearby. We need to
know what to bring, access wise and clothing wise. Tackle and licensing, this sounds like a good year in advance planning idea.
To make something like this work we need to start now, but Im in for sure! haven't taken a long road trip except to Alaska in quite a while and would like to hit the road at least one more time before I get to old for one. Richard |

Don't worry Richard we will not impose on Keith. I am think a hotel. Maybe a ma&pa restraunt to get hot food in us in the morning and plan the days
events. I am sure there is snow machine rentals in the area. As far as clothing gos bring everything you own and layer properly. I can tie some flies and I
sure some other members will won't to tie. We have a good amount of time to get ready. I am looking forward to it!

Well lets got it going, Im in for a prolonged rod trip fishing this next year, and Ive taught at the Air Forse Servival class up above Donner Pass in winter so
no problem, just need to hook up with people that are familiar with the river, the hatch and what lines are needed to do it right.
Although I hate imposing on anyone so if motels or hotels (B&B) are available nearbly that would be my preference. Again you bet lets do it! Richard |

Hi Thom,
Just do post the none resident requirements for licensing, and the available motels and such, and expected rod conditions. I have some pretty hearty 4X4s but driving them up will change the gas milage considerably, however if thats whats necessary to get there I need to know it. Who knows what next years gas will cost. Also who's making the catch of the day flys, I know Im gonna be totally in the dark and do intend to hook some fish. Also the tackle? floating, sinking, etc, what work best and weather, I really want to make this Clave, its time for a cross country road trip for me before I get too old and I do have two brand new SUV's with less than 10K miles on them, besides my bullet proof rubicon 4X4s. Its either the lower 48 this comming year or a trip to Alaska. Richard |

where in Montana? This sounds like it would be a fun time. If anyone has an idea of an area, i would be willing the give a hand in contacting motels and what
not.

Oh %@#%...Mountainshark is in too? This is going to be a hard clave for me to stay away from...even if it involves a plane ticket.

In fishing for these Bulls, is it a similar style to our Dollies here in the puget sound...anything predominately white and roughly 4"-6" long...

Well guys like Keith was saying there is only one river in Montana that you can legally fish for Bulls and that is the South Fork of the Flathead River.
http://fwp.mt.gov/fishing/license/bulltrout.html I obviously don't want to plan an event that would
be stretching any rules as it might create a bad name for the forum or it's members. So we have to plan something around the South Fork Flathead or maybe
on the Metolius here in Oregon. The winters aren't as bad in Oregon and the Metolius is a spring-fed river so flow fluctuation wouldn't be an issue.
Here is a little info: http://www.fs.fed.us/r6/c...ver-stream/metolius.shtml
Let's throw this around and see what we would like to do. We still have plenty of time to plan. Later, Thom |

Anyone have an opinions about the clave being in Oregon? I could put on a pretty cool event here in central OR. I was also thinking of throwing in steelhead
and maybe making it not just about bull trout but maybe a celebration of late fall/ early winter. If there is anyone interested in something like this let me
know. I know there are a few oregon boys on here.

hey thom,
i just found out that my territory is being expanded to just north of portland sometime this winter/spring, so i'll be nearby. i'd love a reason to drive another few hours to fish central oregon. keep me posted. -mike |

To reach good fishing on the S. Fk of the Flathead, you need to get back into the Bob Marshall Wilderness. Easy access this is not. Serious backcounty fishing. Beautiful river, though. Lot's of easier-to-reach fishing in the area, but not for bull trout. If the clave ends up in Oregon and someone still wants to fish the wilderness corridor in MT, let me know. We have a family cabin on the edge of the
Scapegoat wilderness, and I'm happy to fish with visitors to the area, when I'm there.

What would be the closet good airport to use to fly into if this Clave ended up in Oregon?

Mike, Let me know when you are going to be in the area. Redmond is about 2.5 hours southeast of Portland. I would love to take you fishing around here.
There is usually some place to go year'round.

Montana would be fun, but I think it may be asking a lot for a group to try and hit the back country all at once. I like the Oregon idea. Cam, just stop in
Salt Lake and I can pick you up. We can fish across Nevada and Oregon hit Washington, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming and the Prove on the way back and have you home
for in time dinner. or about a week or 2 late.

Mountainshark...damn...that would be quite a trip...but I think if I could sell the wife on the Clave it would be to drop in for a couple of days and out
again. We'll see. Airfare for this February is really reasonable to both Redmond and Portland (Under $300 from Charlotte).

Well Im in for an Oregon Clave, depending on gas prices I will either drive (my prefercence) or fly if gas prices are high. so lets find out, Im a Western
Airlines club member do they fly to Portland, I think they do then I could get a connecting flight to Redmond, or perhaps we could get some sort of carpool
going with a rental car. Again it all depends on Gas prices next year. I have no problem picking up some members in Portand on my way through if gas prices are
at least reasonable and car pooling them to the clave. Hotel or accomidations would be necessary at your location as would some form of transportation should I
not drive up. How many days are we looking at, not that it matters, Im retired and noted for not walking away from fish. However Im sure many are still working
for a living and have schedules.
Also post tackle you thing fits, wouldn't want to bring the wrong stuff. Also the best local flys, winter is when I tye but I would also like to buy some of the local tyes to get it right. Richard |
