Favorite Steffen Bros. Rod |
Lead | |
|
When it comes to Steffen Bros. rods, lots of board members own one...or more. Which one is your favorite? If you have a length not listed, choose the one that
seems closest to you. Of course; everyone likes pics too.
WELL? What's your favorite Steffen Bros. rod? Which ones do you own? (Result) |

Don't own one, but the one I'm dying to have is the 8'3" 5/6. I want it specifically for lake fishing...

I have the 7'9" 3/4 and the 7'6" 2/3. Both fine rods. Seems I like them best with a DT2 on the 2/3 and either a WF4 or DT3 on the
7'9". I've also fished some others and the 8'0" 3/4 really stood out as a great rod.

I have only the 8'6" #5-6 and it is great all-purpose rod. Next year I hope to get 8'0" #3-4 rod for fine work.

I sold my 8' 5/6 in favor of the 8'6" 4 piece, both very fine rods with the 8'6er a being little more versatile. My next Steffen will be the 8' 3/4. I have a couple of the pre chesnut Steffen's which I really like too, particularly a 7' 4 wt. |

Has anyone tried the 7'6" 5/6?

i had mark make me a special blank. it is the 8' 3/4 but with staggered ferrule. the tip secition is just under 6'. he made two because the first one
was not straight to his high standards. he shipped both to me. i extended the second butt section so i have an 8' 4" as well. i use a
rio grand wt forward 4 on this one. it is so smooth. i love this rod. i rarely fish the 8' version because the 8'4" is so nice and i like a little more length. i took the second tip and extended it and made a 6'4" rod with a nickle silver ferrule. this is not a staggered ferrule. i have not fished it yet. i have lawn cast it and it also likes the rio grand 4wt line. this set up gives me quite a bit of versitility. i can take the two butt sections with me and just the one reel and also use the 6'4" rod wit that reel. i should try the short rod with a 3wt just to see if i like it. i would like to get a 7'6" as well. |

Scud,
There's another one to add to the list: 8' 2/3, although I think only two exist. http://www.steffenbrothersflyrods.com/images/Rods2%20077.jpg Any one own this model? Please describe. John |

i would be interested in an 8' 2/3. i think mark does not like to make that rod for some reason.

I had to go to the source - Mark said that he does make the 8' 2/3 in glass, but felt the 7'6" was a "better" rod. He said that the
8' was a getting a little "noodley" and not for current or big fish, but would handle 12-14" fish with no problem. Given that, he has sold
"quite a few of them". Any one try one???

I've had a couple of steffen rods including the 8' 4wt in 3 piece. personally, i didn't think it was noodely at all and i prefer medium rods. his
rods, the few that i have tried are on the faster side. i liked his 8'6' 5/6 the best.

I spoke to Mark Steffen the other day on the phone and he said that he would make an 8 foot 3in 3/4 weight which I haven't seen any mention of on here
although he commented that he thought 7'7"-8' was the prime rod length for that weight. I'm trying to decide between this, the 7'9"
2/3 weight or the 8' 2/3 weight. All in 3 piece configurations. Does anybody have any comments about the 2/3 weight. I'm really more interested in a
3 weight line so I want to make sure that the rod isn't too light. I have no experience with his 2/3 weight rods but I do have an 8 ft 3/4 weight (2
piece). Also, does anybody have experience with the 2 piece vs 3 piece rods? Have you noticed any noticeable difference in the action?

jrb78,
Mark says I had one of the first two 8'3" 3/4 blanks he built. It's a strong blank vs. the 8' 3/4. Amazing the difference 3" makes. I think it's best suited for a DT3 line. MO, good rod. Steffen rods seem to perform well with either line rating. I just fished both the 7'6" 2/3 and 7'9" 3/4 this weekend. I fished the 7'6" 2/3 with a DT2 and 7'9" 3/4 with a DT3. My pal Bob has the 2/3 in both 7'6" and 7'0". Both are good but that 7'0" feels like it's hit the sweet spot. He also has the 7'9" and 8'0' in the 3/4. These rods are good with either line. Gut feeling: I don't think I'd like the 2/3 stretched out into a 7'9". Mark recommended the 7'9" 3/4 when I asked about which rod would be best with a #3. It's great with a DT3. I've cast the 8'0" 3/4 with a DT3 as well. I liked it. My advice: trust Mark's advice when it comes to his blanks/rods. |

when i made the 8' 4" version of his 8' 3/4 by extending the spare butt i used a glass insert and extended that a few inches forward of the
winding check position. that insert acted like a swelled butt in a bamboo rod by stopping the flex just in front of handle. mark may have
used a similar devise when he made his 8' 3" 3/4 wt but probably did it with added material. i bet its a nice rod. |

Thanks for bring this thread back up again. I am really wanting a 8'6" 5/6 weight blank as a big water/drift boat/lake fly rod for out West trips.

My taste have changed since this post began. If there's a heaven, I'd be there fishing midges with my Steffen 7'6" 2/3. Hell? That'd be
some graphite rod from the Walmart. It would be stiff; it'd have a fake cork grip and it would have a graphite reel seat!

Cameron wrote: You may wish to choose your float trip wisely. On the South Fork of the Snake last year, I fished the riffles hard. Once the wind got up, which it did both days in the afternoon, just as the fish came up in numbers over the edge of the drop-off, my Steffen 8ft 5/6 was too soft. What was needed was a fast 4/5 weight 8ft graphite stick with a thin profile. Float trips on different, less windy water, may suit 'glass better; on the Missouri this year, my McFarland 8ft 6in 7wt para was OK with a WF7F sylk in some wind, but it wasn't blowing too hard. alistair59...your post is a perfect reminder that you just can't take ONE rod on a trip. I took five fly rods to Wyoming this past August.
