I decided to refinish it using the Krylon Hammered finish paint (black) that I stumbled upon last month. I really like this paint for reel refinishes because its ability to hide a lot of the imperfections that are in the old reel frames. Anyway, I thought I'd put a photo Tutorial together on how I do a typical refinish job on a reel. The first two photos will give you an idea of how beat-up the finish was. These next 2 photos show the reel after the old paint was stripped off This is a photo after the reel frame was primed These next 3 photos is what the reel came out looking like when it was finished All things considered, I'm pretty happy with the results! When it can't hurt and might help, why not? That one came out as good as or better than the factory finish and will probably be equally if not more durable. Yup, Barry, per your comment below, I use clear enamel over refinishes also. In fact, I have some older reels with undeteriorated finishes, but models I know to be prone to chipping, so I have used clearcoat enamel over the factory finish. I usually shoot a couple of coats of "Clear Coat" over the reels after they're painted. I've found this really toughens the finish up and lessens the chance of dinging up the paint. I've had pretty good luck the last few years with the refinishes holding up well. These new paints that are on the market now days pretty much make the refinish a "no-brainer". Like you said "When it can't hurt and might help, why not? " Time is precious. Waste it wisely! Barry

I like the hammered look, and I think the primer pobably makes the finish more durable. Did you add a clear coat to the finish? At thr Tuesday auction,I may bring my reel ( an OC 90) and get your opinion on how it works. Les

Really seems to help protect the paint below. I too really like the look of the Hammered Finish Paint. It'll sure hide a lot of blemishes that are on these old reel frames. Wouldn't do it to a collector. Often I have been exhausted on trout streams, uncomfortable, wet, cold, briar scarred, sunburned, mosquito bitten, but never, with a fly rod in my hand have I been in a place that was less than beautiful.

We should only post pictures of broken ones, tell everyone how terrible they are, at least until we corner the market.

I just got four of them in pretty good shape as part of a package deal and they balance some of the bigger heavier wt. venerable rods pretty well. I'm thinking it all might work well from a canoe.
