Line Weights and Rods - Scott F-Series. |
Lead | |
|
I have been thinking a bit about rods and line weights. I've got a Scott F703/3 black blank rod (factory build) and while it is rated a 3, I am thinking I
actually prefer it with a DT-4 line. I use the Cortland Peach lines. This got me wondering, would the 7 1/2 foot 4-weight Scott F-series rod actually be a
5-weight?? And, what about the lighter line weights in the Scott F series? Do you guys have any experience with these rods and what is your opinion. I'd
be interested to know what you think about their action in general and the line weights you use on them. Where would you rank the Scott F-series in terms of
you favorite rod action? Anybody have any experience with the 1 or 2 weight F-series rods? Just looking to open a bit of a dialog here.

Hello, I have that blank also - I agree - a 4 for short work (or a SA3) for me. I have read posts where the 1-2 weights enjoyed 2-4 lines. If I remember right,
several others thought later Scott glass was a line higher than recommended. Yet , I have a 7/2 Brown 3 that loves a SA2... and a early Brown 7.5 that loves a
SA4... Hmmm... 2cents, right?

line weight is entirely subjective, but a lot of times, when you get it figured out for yourself, someone else will think something else.

nativebrownie remembers correctly. I have the current model 6'0" Fibertouch that Scott rates as a 1-weight. As I've written here before, I used a
DT-1 line on it once and hated it. After some experimentation, I now use a DT-3 Sylk on it and love it. I even tried a DT-4 Sylk once and it almost passed
muster but had a bit too much thump on the back/fwd casts.

I have the seven foot three weight and it likes a 3DT just fine. I have been using the SA XPS line on it without issue.

Gentlemen, who makes the "Sylk" line? Is that a Cortland product?

I fish my 703/3 with a DT 3 but recently picked up a WF 4 and it casts it very well. This spiked my interest in the 4 weight rod and using a 5 weight line on
it. I don't own that rod but if it casts a 5 weight well I might be interested in it.
Hmm. I love my F. |

YEah, well that's what I was thinking too! I'd really like to own a good 7 1/2 foot fiberglass 5 weight. SO, if the 4 weight Scott will cast even a
WF-5 line, which I'll bet it will, I am now motivated to get one! Does anybody own the 7 1/2 foot Fibertouch? Will it cast (preferably for me) a DT-5 or
even the WF-5? Would like to hear.

I've been casting the 7'6" 4wt for a while - I've got one on loan for a review. I think its a true 4wt, but it's got a lot of guts. The
rod is delicate but can muscle-up whenever its asked to. Quite a versatile rod, actually. The weather has conspired against my fishing this rod since I got
it in January, but I'm planning on getting out for a couple hours for some trout action come Tuesday (weather permitting - or I'm moving!). I'll
make every effort to cast it with at DT5 and a WF trout 5 just to see how it behaves and report back here.

Thank you, Joe. I will be very interested to hear more about this rod. As I said, I really like the 3 wt. and for me it will handle one line size up. I did
not go fishing this morning, but maybe I should have, sunny and 41 degrees right now. But it's spring and the wind is up. That and the sun will limit the
BWO hatch. Maybe tomorrow.....

How about...... | ||

Is it possible to think of the F series rod in terms of how much line would it handle to make it act like a softer rod? If you like the action of the faster
Scott rod its probably just fine with the designated line. If you prefer slower actions I would bet the Scott would require at least two or even three line
weights heavier to get it to feel and act like a Lami/McFarland/Diamondglass action.
For those that have both it would be interesting to cast a 7' Phillipson 6wt and a 7' Scott 3wt with the same 6wt line and see what the difference is. Marshall |

I may string my 703/3 with my 5 weight today and see what happens on the lawn.

I like the 764 fibertouch with a TT4. The line seems perfectly suited to the rod.I read on this board previously that given the success of the fibertouch
series,Scott was considering adding a 5 wt. rod to the roster in '09. If so I hope they do it without raising the price again.

Hello!
searching a line for Scott F, 6´6 #2, usually fished with hook sized 12-18, dries and tiny sinking stuff, hmmmm,,, what are thous for english,,, I casts about 25-40´ Thinking #2 DT or #3 WF, am i right? hope someone could help me, and sorry my bad english... |

Hello, Lucius,
If you mean the reddish 90's blank Scott F 6'6" 2 weight, then I find that to be a strong rod. I use a 4 for short work and a 3 for longer work. If 25-40', my own preference would be a SA DT3. Funny, I really enjoy the reddish 703 Scott - I like it with a SA2 - 3... figure... Enjoy that Scott.. NB |

...or if yours is the current black F 652, I have that rod and liked it best with an SA DT-3 Mastery Trout.

I was fishing my 7'6" #4 with an Airflo Platinum WF4 for a couple seasons. Switched to the newer Airflo Ridgeline WF4 this past season. I like the rod
with either WF4 balanced with an Islader IR2. Never crossed my mind to try a different line. While everyone's talking "how 'bout a DT5?",
I'm thinking "mmm....DT3?". I fish another rod with a DT3 though...and don't need any more choices. I'd describe the action as crisp and
even. It's a great casting and good tracking rod. As Joe said, it's versatile. It's the type of rod that you could use year round for trout.
Imagine owning just one rod...?????? Sorry... Oh, it works well fighting a bit of wind; can cast a dry nicely; bounces streamers along the bottom and though
it's 7'6"...I like it for high sticking. IMO, it feels closer to a medium action graphite than most glass rods. It's the rod to recommend to
the leary graphite user that would like to try some quality glass.
