I'm in central NY (Binghamton area),
and grew up learning to flyfish on an old W+M 6'6" glass rod.
In my late teens, 20's, and half of my 30's I don't think I touched a fly rod once.
(too busy touching other things? <g>)
But now I'm back in NY,
and fly fishing (obsessively) for the past 3yrs.
During that time, I've been fishing small-med streams close by,
with a Cabela's starter kit (8' 5wt. Three Forks), but this year I'm going all-glass.
I just picked up a Diamondglass 8' 5wt.; and am looking forward to "smearing butter on Sophia Loren" as they say...<wink>
I'm also looking to pick up a 7' 5-6wt. vintage rod, (Fenwick, Heddon, Browning, Cortland, etc...) for some of the smaller streams I fish.
(see my solicitation in the for sale/wanted to buy Forum here...)
These slower, fuller flexing rods will suit my fishing style better than my med-fast graphite, I'm convinced.
I swing 2-3 wet flies (traditional patterns) on droppers 100% of the time, when fishing for trout.
Small-Med streams I frequent: Otselic River, Owego Creek, Geneganselet Creek, Tioughnioga River, Fall Creek, Delaware River (West Branch headwaters)
Med-Large streams: Delaware River (West Branch)
I also have a trip planned with my Dad, to fish the Chateaugay and Salmon rivers, up north;
in early June. I'm totally psyched for this year's season! (opening day in NY = Apr01)
Also, A buddy of mine just bought some land with a nice pond teaming with largemouth bass and panfish,
and I had a blast fishing that with poppers last summer. So I have that to look forward to in July-Aug when
the streams get low, and warm.
