Last from JW Young, England, you mean, right? What a shame. These reels were thoroughly modern in design, yet had continuity with, rather than rejection of, tradition. Top quality, incorporating the best of contemporary materials and manufacture. What's the size and capacity? I notice it has the massive gear and pawls typical of Young reels, so it should be a great reel of its type.

the reel is extremely light, a 3-1/2" MW, loaded with 100 yds of 20-lb. and a DT6.
I've never handled a better reel made on any side of any pond. |

Anybody ever owned or used a Fin Nor Finite Click and Pawl reel. I picked up one (Fin Ite II) for $50 shipped. It is excellent.

$50 D-Town? That's a felony. Stopped into the fly shop at the Yellow Breeches and saw a new TFO I click-pawl and I was impressed. It's made from block aluminum and has a nice pale olive dun color. I think it's worth the $100 sticker. Another reel in the case was the latest rendition of the SA System 1 in the 456. I was surprised. The drag felt a lot smoother and mellower than the old ones I have (prior to softening the springs). Nice to know some nice click pawls for under $100 are still being made.

I recall seeing the Avons on Overstock.com and in the "For Sale" ad of a large Conn. fly shop. You're making me wish I bought one. As the Abels go...what a fine reel! I'll be loading mine up with some blue Teeny backing one day.
I was curious; have any of you seen the new TFO I reels? They really are nice. |

Scud Dog--
I've been eyeing the TFO's as well, but what I'm really interested in is what reel you like with your Yellow Fenwick. Cameron was gracious enough to let me cast his 5-piece, and while I really liked the rod, I'm thinking its weight makes for an interesting "balance" problem. Any thoughts? |

Scud Dog,
How do you think the non-black TFO No. 1 would look on a Quiet Loop rod? All the written descriptions of the reel call it "silver". The photos on the TFO website make it look an unimpressive, drab gray (TFO No. 1). But you've actually seen one and you describe it as pale olive, which sounds much more interesting. Compared to the website photo, is the reel lighter? darker? greener? yellower? When Abel discontinued the Trout models, this size/weight reel in a new click pawl design became rather hard to find. Is the TFO good enough to be a replacement for the Trout TR Lite? The price is certainly good enough. Tom |

Tom,
www.yellowbreeches.com has the reel I was looking at. It's darker than the silver one in the photo and is more like the old gray CFOs, but it's darker and has more of an olive cast than the photo or CFO. It also has a nice finish. It's not glossy, but it's not as matte as Abel "guide finish" or the old Cimaron either. I'd say it's semi gloss like the new bronze CFO.... The writing on the reel is a muted gold tone. I have a couple Q-Loops too (7'0"s in the #2 and #4). They weigh about the same. I 've been fishing the #4 with my Featherweight and have a DT2 on a black IR1. TFO I weighs the same as both reels I'm using. The drag is layed out like Ron's Jubilee (or like the System 1). Drag sounds crisp. I think it'd look good; fit good and balance well. It's a well made reel. If I didn't have a couple reels that weight already, I'd buy it myself. -SD PS: The TFO MKI pictured in the Mudhole flyer I just got IS the color of the one I saw. |

Anyone on here have experience with the Bristol reels? Specifically the 66? I have one, and one of the fittings to hold the clicker into the frame broke so I removed half of the drag assembly, leaving it as a single click pawl reel. I love it!

the thing about the Jubilee is the drag is the sweetest of the BFR style that I have ever handled - I believe it it had some hand tuning.

half its value - $140. It was listed only in ebay UK and seller would not ship to US, so I bid and had a friend in Hereford buy it for me.

I have a Bristol 65 and I use it too Besides being one of my grandfather's reels, it's main claim to fame is that it's fairly heavy and balances out a old 8 or 9' bamboo rod pretty well |

Well, dudley that's funny you should ask, I have a 66 and I removed half of the drag system on it due to a problem, and it works better than ever. I just need a line and I will be fishing it!

I came to be the proud owner of this Abel TR2 earlier this week. At first I was a bit disappointed because it appeared to have and was advertised as having a cast frame. After a call to Abel today I found out it was fully machined and had a "guide" finish aka mat black. According to the person I spoke with at Abel the TR series with a solid back was produced from '88-90 or '92. I can't remember exactly. If someone knows more about the manufacture dates of this reel please step in and let me know. Either way I was/am very pleased to have this NIB w/ warranty card Abel tr2.
![]() ![]() ![]() I found the "click" to be a little loud so I'll be adjusting the spring later tonight hoping to quiet it down a bit.(thanks Ron for the tip |

GENTLY !!! a little bit goes a long way (I think they did provide a spare spring, but it's a delicate little thing)

Nice reel. Sometimes you can mute a click just a little by using a heavier grease on it; something to try before tinkering with the spring.

Re: Young Jubilee | ||

That's a sweet deal and a super sweet reel. I snagged the X-stream in the same size this summer, like the one Ron posted pics of. For $129, I shoulda got two! You shoulda too Ron! The TR2 spools are $119. The spools are interchangeable. If you watch Ebay, a number of TR1 and TR2 are popping up with a starting bid of $165 + $12 to ship. They're Dutch auctions, so you'll be able to snag one at that price. Pricey? I think it's a good value for that reel. I also beleive they're easily the equal to ( probably better) of a Hardy Lightweight; Orvis CFO or Islander IR. Considering that, they're great reels for a great price. Try to get a fair looking used Hardy for that money.
