Tom,
Thanks - I've been lurking for some time, but couldn't join because I'd registered my name on Clark's Bamboo board. Then it struck me that I just needed to use a different email address! Doc |

Great contributions all!
That Roddymatic graphic showing basic casting techniques with the reel is freakin amazing- just about a perfect visual of what can be done, with few words. As an author and graphics guy in my 50's, I'm reminded that the real golden age of graphic design flourished, and maybe died, before computer design ever really got off the ground. |

Re: Reel papers | ||

Someone requested Airex. I'll try to get a decent scan of these, if I can remember to bring them to work.
![]() You can see from the parts list that Airex made the most of a handful of parts (a la Martin). There were two reel sizes, the smaller models 370 and 373, and the larger models 371, 375, and 377. Whenever possible, the same part was used for all models. Parts 11, 12, 15, and 16 were only used on the model 377, which had an adjustable drag. ![]() And here is a family portrait. The cute as a button 373 is front and center with the 370 to the right. The big guy in the back left is an Airex Taurus saltwater reel. Interesting design, but the drag assembly was riveted (?!) and the dissimilar metals fused together nicely. Tom

Re: Reel papers | ||

cofisher asked on another thread about the Martin Portage series of rod kits a while back. The catalog examples I have don't include reels and other tackle as was suggested, but I'll post on this thread as it's a catalog pic:

Thanks Kevin. Looks like Their answer to WM Trailmaster series. Any idea what they sold for or quality? You're probably old enough to remember, aren't you?

Nope- the catalog I own doesn't have prices or an order form in it.

Although these manuals are for specific models, the section on the dual-pawl design will apply to any USA-made Martin model so-fitted.
![]() ![]() Note that the following page shows the extra drag (both pawls engaged) positions according to winding direction. The recommended use is with one pawl engaged as shown above. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Nice one whrl, with a perfect interior shot.
This discussion is gradually developing into a more substantial "catalog" of reel papers and very helpful photographs from members- excellent!!! |

Using my scans | ||

Hi Kevin,
I would be honored for you to use my scans in your listings. I have a Pflueger Reel Parts Manual, Shakespeare, and Bronson that I would be willing to forward scans to you for you to use. Please let me know at jerskine@alltel.net and I would be glad to forward them. Jack |

Re: Reel papers | ||

Jack, welcome and thank you! Check my email reply.
Fishreelman is a new member and has offered to provide scans on the "reel papers" discussion. I saw a sweet Martin FlyWate he's offering with box & papers on ebay, automatics are something we haven't had much of in the papers category. My father-in-law landed some ginormous carp with an auto when I was @ his lake a few months ago. He's 83 and I guess he enjoys the auto's line takeup, tho he fishes almost every type of reel and rod imaginable too. |

Re: Reel papers | ||

Here's the first batch of new member Fishreelman's papers. They vary from repair parts pricing and diagrams, to gear tags, to what may even be an advertisement or two. The papers date from 1960-1965, with some undated. The papers are not complete as to each item, as Jack may have just provided those most relevant to fly fishing gear which seems appropriate.
My observation is that Jack's scans are very high quality, allowing sufficient enlargement on your photo editor to examine the pages in great detail- including the blasted fine print and reel diagram details that are usually so hard to decipher even when the actual paper is in your hand. Thanks Jack for your time and effort and we'll look forward to more as you can provide them over time! Jack's moniker on eBay is <fishreelman_notgeldcoins> so have a look from time to time. middlemac In order, the paper batches are as follows: Shakespeare 1960 Reel Repair Parts Price List for Fly Reels Bronson 1964 Repair Parts and Price List Pflueger (undated) Parts Manual No. 4 I'll post the next few in a second listing ASAP: Browning 1965 Fishing Rods Wholesale Price List Langley (undated) advert or insert? Gear tags and misc. papers of interest Note: While some of the individual reels have been "papered" previously in this discussion, I'm listing these as of interest because the specific papers are unique so far.
