A warm front blew thru last night in New England and we awoke to light rain and cloudy gray skies. But by midday the sky began to brighten and the wind to abate. From there on it just kept on getting nicer and nicer and we ultimately had a stunning sunset which I truly enjoyed on the ride home after a fine day chasing smallies in a jewel of a kettle pond. Its afternoons like to today that get you thru the long cooold winter. Hope you enjoy the pics... .

If I were to keep them I usually wait until this time of year say spring or fall as they lose that 'pond' flavor of summer.

Love those eyes. But I will say that all the fish caught yesterday were suprisingly very close in size both in length and weight. Just curious, but did you check the water temp ? I gave up river fishing smallies here in Virginia and usually don't do much on the river once it gets this cold. Jayhawker, you won't believe what a smallmouth feels like after catching largemouth, especially if you get a chance to fish for them in a river.

In June I fish a lake where they feed heavily on out migrating salmon smolt. It is a kick to watch them chase and hammer baitfish patterns. I can't wait to do it with my glass rods.

I live on the St Croix River in Minnesota and am 35 minutes from prime smallmouth fishing on the upper Mississippi River. 99% of my fishing efforts focus on those incredible river smallies. Thanks so much for posting. My efforts have shifted from fishing to tying....it is getting cold. Make sure to see my smallmouth fly called the Skidmark, it is a great one for smallmouth. I don't get an opportunity to fish for smallies or perch so it's a treat to see someone fishing such a beautiful area and catching. Save some perch for me. Catch and Release fishing is a lot like golf. You don't have to eat the ball to have a good time.
