Rod Grips : Favorite type |

Whats your favorite style rod grip? I like slim to medium thick full wells on 6wt. & up rods. Smaller ( 0 to 5wt.) rods I like reverse half wells
tapering into a screw locking cork reel seat . Whats yours ?

<=7'0" <=#5
I like a slim Cigar (~0.90), with a thinly-tapered "superfine" front (~0.60-0.70) >=7'0" >=#5 I like a standard Half-Wells, with the rear tapering down about flush with the seat.

I'm stuck on my favorite modified Wells grip, 1.0 inch at the widest point in the center, tapering toward front and rear,
with a thumb ridge at the front
a couple of favorites that my model came from: Andymanyankee's modified Wells
and a Heddon #14 from the late 40s (seriously, they really called this a peckerhead grip in the catalogs)
the rods are never obsolete - the marketing is.

that's a funny grip ron!
remember when you could just say (or print) stuff and laugh? my older sister used to call woodpeckers peckerheads until someone (sadly) told her the error of her ways. i had to laugh when she wasn't looking cause i sure as heck wasn't going to be the one to spoil the fun. i guess that was kinda mean. anyway, grip shapes? i'm not a big fan of the wester-style grips that many rods come with today. i like some cigar grips and the modified wells a lot. but i also like the look of the ritz style grips tom posted a while back. those are classy IMO. |

It always gets comments and questions, especially whether I modified it, but it's a very good grip.
I decided to move this thread over to Glass Tech, where I thinkit fits a little better than on the reels page. Ron Mc

For 8'0"-#5 and up, I prefer a "conservative full wells". For lighter and shorter rods, I prefer a "fishtail. They both have a similar
feel to them, though they are different in shape. Since I prefer uplocking reel seat, I use a flair on the bottom. An uplocking reel seat gets the reel closer
to the hand, which I believe gives a feel to the rod. It's a lower motion of inertia. A crisper start and stop in the casting stroke. I prefer grips with a
little shape, not too "curvy", yet not "flat". Here's a few grips and reel seats, they are actually part of my rod appointments for my
line of fiberglass fly rod that I will debut soon. -Fred

My favorite grip? I'm sure you can guess but I like the Fenwick style grip. I guess this is probably called the modified wells. It seems Andy makes
similar grips.
One of these days I'll commission Andy to build me one of those fine rods.

Gypsy modified the Scott Fibertouch grip for me on this Steffen build. I like the slight forward taper which gives me a feeling of control.

Full wells on 6wt and heavier, half wells (modified wells, Fenwick style, whatever you want to call it) on 5wt and lighter, but I also like a decent
diameter cigar grip on the lighter rods as well.
There are a lot of really nice grips pictured in this post. Nice stuff, guys! |

Much like LeoCreek, I like a full Wells grip, especially for the thumb rest. I do have a Ritz style grip on a 6wt that I like and recently I put a 5 sided grip
on an 8wt that is very comfortable, even if a little odd looking. Respectfully rvreclus

I like reverse half wells.
BTW - does anyone know of a web site that illustrates all these different grips? |

Thanks for that question and link. Over the years I have forgotten the common names of the grip styles; most of my grips were built up from cork rings anyhow,
and I have gradually modified each to my liking. I guess most started as Full Wells or Cigar, and most have ended up as reverse half-wells or western. The one
shown in onemoredeer's avatar is about it for me.
I could never find a comfortable spot on a Fenwick grip, but when I got a battered old HMG, I did a quick rehab, which included, without removing the entire grip, cutting out some cork, inserting rings, and reshaping it in the same basic style.
I used to have some thick to thin profile from the foregrip to reel seat. Here's one I haven't gotten around to modifying yet, except to add one cork ring at the base to flare at the reel seat. Eventually, I'll turn down the foregrip section.

forgot to add the Phillipson hammer grip.
the long tapered grip lets everyone find their favorite grip diameter, and the taper also serves as a continuous thumb ridge - while I still find my favorite modified Wells model more comfortable, Bill Phillipson was onto something with this grip.
