Some Old Young Reels |

I think I have enough for now but there were a few more Young's reels I needed to get my hands on. I finally came across one of those dark gray Beaudex
reels - very cool. This one's a 3 1/2 MW. I paired it with my new Landex (3 1/2 MW) and a Battenkill multiplier (just back from a tune-up by Bulldog -
Thanks Ron, very nice) so you can get an idea of the difference in color. You can see what a beast the multiplier is when lined up next to a MW. That should be
it for now - except for when I find that Revolution that keeps escaping me!

Hi Doug,
I thought I was buying a black reel and my first response after opening the box was " Shoot - somebody has painted this reel". Expecting it to be black, it just looked off. After inspecting it and seeing this was indeed its original color, I recalled a thread from some time ago here about these dark gray Youngs. No, we don't see them that much. |

Hi Steve - glad you liked the tune-up. As always, I just made it the way I like it...
and yes, the smooth-finish gray Beaudex are as pretty as it gets

Reels like that smooth gray Beaudex are why I learned to wind RH.

Great array, Frank, just great. The multiplier--a unique design that got some coverage here a while ago--is robust machinery, with a better gearbox than a 1960
MG or Vauxhaul. Thanks to you and Ron, who has or had the "Fishhawk" version I think it was, I can enjoy them vicariously .

Frank Longcast, Nice lookers indeed. I've always admired your collection of minty Young reels. By any chance, Can those multiplier reels be mechanically
reversed to be wound either with the right or left hand? Again, nice reels. Vix

Hi Vix, It can be reversed for right or left hand wind. I'm hoping to pair it with a big rod for tossing some considerable streamers and bugs for bass.
Although it would be nice to hook into a landlocked on it as well. Kevin - I've only fished the early smooth Beaudex so far so I imagine the others will get their share of wear soon. |

Very very nice! Those reels look too minty to be real!
Surprises can sometimes work out really well. I bought what was advertised as a 3-1/2" MW Beaudex which when it arrived turned out to be a 3-3/4"...after I'd given up all hope of ever finding one it just fell in my lap. |

Hi Frank;
Thanks for sharing photos of your pristine Young reels. I as apparently others, have a hard time believing these reels were not made yesterday! I can now see my new years resolution for collecting reels will have a "Young" theme. Wayne |

Wayne, I know what my New Year's resolution should be!
As beautiful as the earlier smooth Beaudex, Pridex and Condex's are, I'm fond of the later silver models. IMHO - the nicest of the "pebbled" finish reels Young made. Smart and classic looking, they also age extremely well. By the way Doug, You're a generous man to make that offer! A 3 1/2 and 3 1/2 MW.

Doug, Given that you'll be doing me an enormous favor I won't even charge you for shipping.
I'll probably even throw in a couple of lines with them. |

Hi Ron;
That;s a mighty fine reel, more reason to start a Young collecting theme! Wayne |

I have a black that matches it, and I keep the two in a double reel case. So far, I only fish them on my 8' Phillipson
and my jewel of jewels, my 1948 smooth finish Gilmour
the rods are never obsolete - the marketing is.

Without a doubt Ron - those earlier, smooth finish reels are just plain beautiful. What size is that Gilmour?
I'd go for it Wayne. A couple Pridex reels and Condex from about the same time (correct me if I'm wrong).
