Agate strippers: Post 'em up |
Lead | |
|
Colston Newton's recent post about pimpin' a rod build with an agate stripper has got me wanting to see pics of your rods with agate strippers. If you
can include the color of the blank and guide wraps in the shot, that would be even better as well.
So let's see 'em. Post 'em up! |

I've always thought that the agate in this photo looks like a Lifesaver candy. Tasty.

man those things are beautiful.
eastprong, I've got a moss agate stripper sitting in the parts bin waiting on the right rod and thread. I bought it to put on my last build but it was way too dark. I was hoping to get one about the color of yours. The one on your T&T is stunning.
It's time to turn over a new fly.

Sorry, I may have gotten a little carried away with the pictures. This might be sacrilege on a Fiberglass forum but, I added some of my Bamboo builds. I take
crummy pics so they don't do the agates justice. Weak camera + bad photographer = crummy pics.
I will put agates on any rod I can. I will even talk customers into agates on, yes I am ashamed to say it, graphite

I don't have a lot of agates on my rods. Here are close up photos of two, very different guides.
Tom The first guide is translucent red with a darkened frame. This guide is mounted on a custom built, brown Phillipson EF80 rod I purchased from one of our members. I've must apologize for all the dust on these photos - wipe and wipe as I might, I could not get all of it off. If you look closely, you can see this rod was dip finished and the varnish is starting to fray inside the ring. With time the varnish will clear from the working surfaces of the guides.
The second agate is completely opaque and reminds me of pink granite rather than glass. This is one of the more unique stones I have seen mounted on a fly rod. I like it. This guide is mounted on a 7 foot, Sceptre build from last year's custom run by the Old Yankee Rod Smith himself, Andy Manchester. I had a lot of trouble keeping both the guide and the rod blank exposed properly, so I went with lighting that shows off the colors in the stone.

Cameron, your photo shows best what I want to ask about. That is, the obvious rather present inside edge instead of a smooth rounded contour. Does this wear
the line? Glenn

There is quite a difference in the Agate stones that the two main manufacturers of Agate stripping guides use. Snake brand typically uses a transparent,
glassier agate that is usually, but not always, thicker than it's competitors . Snake Brand Agate guides are now manufactured by Struble. The other
producer of Agate guides, Arcane Component Works, uses a more opaque stone. Both look nice but if you have a preference you should let your rod builder know.
Mildrum (REC) and Pac Bay also sell Agate guides however I have no experience with their Agate guides. According to the Pac Bay web site their Agate guides
have a cheap chrome plated brass frame instead of nickel silver frames that the other manufacturers use.
You get whay you pay for.
Glenn I haven't noticed my fly lines wearing out any sooner with Agate guides. Dirty lines and guides especially the tip top probably play a bigger role in wearing out lines than the Agate guides. Arcane Component Works Agate guide
Snake Brand Agate guide- good example of one of their skinnier stones
