Back before the dawn of time when I first got lucky it took me three gos to really get the knack, and if fishing can be mentioned in the same sentence its
pretty much been that way for me with any new art or skill ever since.
First outing for carp - inspired by this forum - didn't have a clue and blanked
Second, lost two but formed a notion what was going on and what and where to try next
This is the third trip, hit the sweet spot, as it were ...
Perhaps not in scenery/venue terms by my usual Wiltshire chalkstream standards... an hour before I landed a 17" grayling in a crystal stream 8' wide
Game on, FF837/Daiwa 809 in action

Burley bread, white deerhair breadcrust crust dryfly, schhhlup!
...hey, it wasn't a fluke! ...
I'm getting the hang of this
This one took a white fuzz fly for drowned bread, fished as a dropper NZ style off the deerhair fly
Moved on to bloodworm patterns as the fish got leary of the bread flies
Fibalite 8'6#6/youngs 1500 finally get on the action. This rod is a beast
FF837 has the last word - a great carp rod, softer tip than the hardy made it a better choice for surface work.
Actually a carp had the last word, one of the many that got away.
Need more fieldwork!
Enjoy!
