Just an opinion... |

If there are fly rods in hell they are wrapped with jasper thread.

Lol, I thought hell was reserved for cane and glass rods wrapped with blue thread.

easy there gypsy!!! I built up a little bluegill rod using a mid and tip from an old bamboo, wrapped it in blue tipped with chestnut, turned out quite stunning
in my opinion!!! I won't even mention what I built up and wrapped with black and silver twist!!!! Lol !!!!! oh yeah, rewrapped a bamboo for my girlfriend
using a dark purple tipped with gold, purple reel seat too. looks like I'm heading straight to the hot house!!!

Bikerfish,
Hope you like it HOT! That said, I confess...I've seen a few rods with twist wraps that I liked. I even posted stuff SAYING I liked it. I've seen cane wrapped with violet....and liked it. Oh...and I saw a Steffen wrapped in teal with tipping and liked it too. So, am I going to Glass Hell or is there hope for a cure through chemistry??????? |

RFMcD Ha! it's all over for me then, I just wrapped a rod with Jasper and (to my chagrin) I kind of liked it. Hey bikerfish I've always thought one of the purple shades would look classy on a glass or bamboo rod, I just haven't found the right color combination yet. |

Yes...and there will be a special place in hell for a certain builder I know (cough...cough...MOUNTAINSHARK) who is thrilled to wrap fly rods in purple and
pink. EEEEKKKKK! HA...

sounds like the makings of a "most hideous build" contest!! well maybe not hideous, how about gaudy, flamboyant, or garish? new or rebuilds only,
no factory rods from the 60's or 70's, no one can compete with some of those!!!

Sooooo........I'm confused. Is the Riffle build posted by littlejr really the devil's pitchfork? In this age of being politically correct isn't
it wrong to be a vocal hater of Jasper? I for one feel this deep seeded hate needs to be nipped in the bud. Does this forum have a shrink on call to deal
with these issues? Poor misguided Golfswithwolves needs help before this hatred manifests itself into an unfortunate hate crime on a Jasper rod.
Sincerely, a concerned forum member

I'm ambivalent on this one.
I have a Granger Favorite cane rod that has jasper wraps w/ gold intermediates (like this one). I probably wouldn't choose jasper wraps on a custom build, but I kinda like the overall look on the Granger. It's definitely an old school, vintage look. I guess it's more charming than knock-out gorgeous. To Hell? No. Maybe, Purgatory. |

Pete,
I view it as "all the more for the rest of us". Sometimes jasper thread is hard to find. I've been using jasper thread on and off since I was ten years old. I don't like long wraps with it, but short wraps or trim can be a nice touch. The mylar underwraps of the 60s and 70s - those were garish. Tom |

Yeah, I agree w/ Tom, those mylar wraps can go to you know where.

send all jasper wrapped rods to me, I will be happy to dispose of them and rid the world of those devilish things!!!! funny note, I have a small wild brown
trout stream about 5 miles from the house named hell run!!! flows through hells hollow, no kidding. I could use those jasper wrapped rods there, as long as
they are 7 1/2 ft or shorter!!!

Gyspy, My reply wasn't that the rod wrapper of jasper were going to hell, but those that wrap in Blue. I don't know where or when the thought of blue
was nixed but all my life It' has been Taboo. I recall seeing only one factory rod done in blue and that was a LL Bean rod. Graphite of coarse.
As for garrish rods, thats the fun of glass. It seems they can't be too over done. Except maybe spiral butt wraps with a ton of finish on them. I'll let Fenwick slide by that comment. But I think a lot of the blame lies with them. Keep the big ugly butt wraps to heavy saltwater gear. I love the look of jasper and am always looking for spools of it. It keeps the feeling to put non-functioning tipping on a rod to dress it up out of my mind. Jasper is as fancy as I care to get any more. Two thread wraps are another of my recent favorite dressy acts, then again no need for those tipping wraps. Just working rods from my bench no a-days, too shakey and blind for the tipping. I'll leave them to younger and steadier wrappers. RFMcD |

I was fishing an Orvis Golden Eagle yesterday morning and noticed that it had greenish-black Jasper wraps. I thought it looked quite handsome on the
yellow-brownish-green blank of the Golden Eagles.
So, since I like both rods that I own w/ Jasper wraps, I guess I can't automatically condemn all rods w/ them. But I would say the potential for "not quite the look I was going for" is higher. |
