Horrocks Ibbotson Rod Info Wanted |
Lead | |
|
I was wondering if anybody happens to know the date and value of the Mohawk/Rainbow, No. 1409 fly rod. It also has a cool atomic looking "Thermo Weld
Process" label. The style of the labels look mid 50's to mid 60's to me, but not sure. I'm taking it fishing this weekend and was curious
about it's origins and value. I have a photo of the labels, but not sure how to attach an image here.
Thanks for any help! |

Tread,
Welcome to the Fiberglass Flyrodders! The Horrocks Ibbotson Rainbow is a classic. I think you are right about the time frame - mid to late 50s. I am very interested in photos of the labels. The easiest way to attach images is to sign up for a PhotoBucket account. That gives you a web storage location for the image. Then you link your Yuku account to the PhotoBucket account and you can import the images pretty easily into a discussion. For details and instructions, check out this Photo Posting thread. Tom |

Tread,
Please post photos- that rod sounds very interesting, and few posters own HI glass rods. Les |

Hi, Thanks for the responses. I am attempting to get an image up here for you to take a look at. I linked to photobucket and I also have the image in my yuku
gallery, but not sure how to get it to this post. I feel like a dinosaur trying to navigate this site! Guess I'll get the hang of it eventually.

Tread, all you need to do once you're linked to photobucket is to open the "add reply" and a new place to reply will open up, including a bunch
of symbols on top of the reply. Click on the 4th from the right (it will say add picture from photobucket) and then click on the photo you want to add.
I cut and pasted the address you posted and the picture came up. The Rainbow is a cool looking rod that reminds me a lot of the old Wright and Mcgill early glass.
Catch and Release fishing is a lot like golf. You don't have to eat the ball to have a good time. |

Ah, yes. Thanks Cofisher. The icon bar does not show up in Safari on my system. I switched to Firefox and all the icons are visible, which obviously makes
adding a picture much simpler! Here's the shot for others to see...

I'll show my age and appreciate the little "nuclear" oribiting electrons or whatever behind the Thermoweld decal. An update to the Mohawk
profile on the other decal.

Yes, the atoms are a pretty nice detail and interesting when paired with the older style American Indian profile. I'd say the rod is near mint if one is
picky. I'll try to get a shot of the whole piece next week. -Tread

Tread,
Thanks for posting the decal photos. Those decals are in really good shape. Those are often the first thing worn off a fly rod. I'm like Hayden - old enough to appreciate the nuclear age image. I have a little Fly Atom rod with a similar logo, but mine is all chipped up. Unlike the HI Mohawk, the best part about Fly Atom is the logo! I agree with FireFox as a browser. Safari, especially an older version, can cause fits on Yuku! Tom

hello Trend, just a little heads up, your rod really looks to be in excellent condition as are the decals, but be aware that prior to 1961 the varnish used on
these unpainted rods did not contain a UV blocker, as such alot of exposure to direct sunlight will cause the fiberglass to break down. Also of course effect
the life of the decals and wraps. If your going to use the rod or keep it out of its protective tube and sock, I would suggest a couple of diluted fine coats
of modern UV protected Spar on the wraps and good coat of pure spar lightly applied on the blank itself.
based on the fact its a Mohawk series rod and a model 1409 at 9ft I would put it as after 1955 and before 1960, if you could post more detailed pictures of the reel seat and grip, the stripping guide and its wraps, both ferrules and their wraps and any of the tip section snake guides and their wraps I could possibly pin down the date a bit better. Also if it came with a cardboard or metal tube, a cloth rod sock and whats printed on the rod sock itself. Richard |

Richard, thanks for the comments! Here are some more shots to look at. Unfortunately, I don't have the original rod sock or tube.

Tread, That is sweet rod. It is in super nice shape. By the look of the logos, reel seat and blank I would date your H-I at anywhere between 1965 to 1970. It
is very similiar in appearance to the Thunderbird series that came out in 1965 (ref. from Johnson&Johnson) I have a Thunderbird from this era and the
blanks look like they are made from the same material. I hope that helps and again, nice rod. -Thom

Based on the catalogs I have, the Mohawk Rainbow 1409 was produced for at least the 1957 - 1966 time frame. The color scheme would probably narrow it down
some, but the catalogs aren't very specific on the colors used.

Wow those pictures help alot, I have to agree with the rest, I'll guess the late period before H I lost its logo to Gladding. Those wraps and the tape
under the spirals are destintive to the Thunderbird era, I have two of those, also that little script decal can say one of two things "tournament butt
sensitive tip" or "Carboloy stripping guide and tip top" Im sure there were other scripted decals there but thats the ones on two of mine.
Yours is an outstanding example, again thanks for posting the pictures. Richard |

Thanks for the comment Richard. The script says, "Tournament Taper Rigid Butt - Sensitive Tip". Any idea of the value of this
rod? Not looking to sell it, just curious.
