I hate to wade into this, but... | ||

Let me preface this by saying I'm not an Orvis hater... or lover. They are a decent company with excellent customer service (in my experience). However
it is incorrect to say "Orvis has survived the Civil War, WW1, Great Depression, WW2, and too many recessions and calamities to count..."
They have not. Orvis, as we know it now, has been in continuous operation since 1964 when Perk Perkins purchased the company for $400,000. He made profound
changes, keeping only the name and focus on fishing and wing shooting as the foundation for his company. It's incorrect to imply they have a longer
history than that, much in the same way it's incorrect to assume that the Marantz stereo gear you buy today has ANY relationship to Saul Marantz or the
Marantz company he started. The name's the same, the company is completely different.
As to egregious catalogization, my prize goes to Sierra Trading Post. One purchase from them and you can wallpaper your house with the promotional stuff they'll send... It just goes to show that if they keep asking "will you buy it now?" that eventually the answer will be "yes" - if only to make the pain stop. Joe C. drink, taste the fruit,

Joe,
I mut have done something to make Sierra's catalogs stop coming (although I get a daily message in my junk e-mail folder). But I can't tell you what it was. I agree though, they cut down a lot of trees to mail me catalogs over the years. Bob |

I was at my local Orvis shop this evening, and noticed that the shop is for sale. I inquired in the asking price, etc...cost of stock and monthly rent. That is
all they are asking. This is not your ORVIS store with pet beds, this is just a fly shop that has always treated people well. The owner is in sad physical
shape and needs to unload it.
That has nothing to do with this post, but honestly, I think that if a company wants to send catalogs, realize that the cost of that catalog is miniscule compared to the profits they see when you buy those leaders, indicators, flies, rods, reels, lines, etc. |
