I just cranked out a few of these for an upcoming trip to northern NM. The stoneflies have started to hatch on the Cimarron, and it should be pretty good next week. Unfortunately, I only get to fish one day.
I wanted to come up with a pattern that was a bit different from what these educated fish usually see. There aren't a lot of fast riffles, so the hackle is clipped on the bottom to make the fly ride lower. The gold (with a hint of orange) dubbing and brown thread rib are a good match for the natural. There's also a bright orange egg sack under the tail.
