I live in central Virginia and fish everything the area has to offer. My home waters would have to be the east slope of the Shenandoah National Park and a
handful of very good farm ponds I fish for bass, crappie, bluegill. I get to the salt a bit when the water is warm and I fish the shad and striper runs up the
James religiously.

Greetings Gentlemen,
I am a brand new member of this forum, I live in Pontypridd, South Wales, UK, in a traditional coal miners' terraced house which overlooks the river Taff. I'm originally from Scunthorpe in North Lincolnshire and I began fishing in 1980 when I was seven years old, on a family holiday to Billing Aquadrome, Northamptonshire. I saw my first Trout in June 1984 in THE river Dove while on a school walking trip to Dovedale but it took me another twenty years to catch one! I enjoy fishing for a variety of species with vintage tackle as suggested by Mr Crabtree in his wonderful book and my favourite waters can all be found on the Wye and Usk Foundation website. cheers Craig |

Hi all, Greetings from South-Eastern Finland. Been building and fishing splitcane rods since 1995 (first ones took three years to complete ;O)
First glass rods of mine: Scot fibertouch 6-piece 4# blank crafted 1994, Fibatube 10.5 ft also built year 1994 still almost in everyday use. Recently I have been interested specially in two hand rods. There is some weird fun in Double Spey with 14 ft Greenheart or even with 17 ft. Splitcane. I live on riverbank of Finlands greatest river "Vuoksi" which has guite good population of brown Trout, but I travel also a lot in nothern Scandinavia; Atlantic Salmon from rivers running to the Arctic Ocean, hiking in the wilderness of Norvegian, Swdish and Finnish lapland the tundraregions for Trout, Grayling and Arctic Char. |

Phoxinus,
Welcome to the Fiberglass Flyrodders! I saw your other post about your Colonsay rod. You have some interesting glass rods. If you get a chance, it would be great if you could post some photos of your home river. I would love to see some photos of the rods you have built too! Tom |

Hey all. I am brand spanking new here. I am in Middletown CT and I fish the Farmington, Housey, and the Salmon. I only have one glass rod right now but that
will soon change. I bought my Scott F703 while on a trip to New Mexico about eight years ago and it has been my best friend ever since. Untold thousands of
central Texas bluegill have been taken with it as well as a few CO and CT trout. I have other nice rods but nothing comes close to the feel of the little glass
rod.

Grouch,
Welcome to the Fiberglass Flyrodders! There are a lot of glass fanatics in Connecticut. Did you have a chance to get to the Northeast Glass Clave a couple weeks back? I've got one of the Scott F703 rods also. You are right, it is a special little rod. I have it on good authority that Jim Bartschi (president of Scott Rods) carries one of these rods behind the seat of his truck. Tom |

Hello
Welcome to the Fiberglass Fly Rodders Grouch ! In all fairness I must warn a Fellow Son Of The Nutmeg State how addicting fiberglass fly rods are. We have a great bunch of folks here all eager to help feed the adiction . Tight Lines and Welcome Loops Andy M

Thanks guys for the warm welcome. I decided a long time ago that I wanted to get into glass after reading an article in American Angler. I was enamored by the
classic appeal, they just seemed like something a guy would take to the stream in the mid 50's. Kinda a utilitarian yet graceful thing. Since then due
mostly to the places I lived at the time I stepped back to graphite, the next rod being a 8'8"Scott Heliply 7wt. That rod was used to chase Texas Gulf
coast reds and specs with great success (my all time favorite fishery). The next rod was a 8' Scott G2 4wt that I bought shortly after moving to CT. I
thought it was the right set up for light east coast dry fly fishing and worked just fine until I picked up the little glass rod one day. Now although I still
love all my rods, I wished I used the money to put back a few more glass rods. Maybe by the end of the summer I will add a 7' 6" Steffen Brothers 4wt
to my modest collection. Oh well, I guess you can never regret owning a few fly rods. At least I can take comfort in the fact that the graphite rods are on the
softer ends of the spectrum and are either loved or hated for that.

I grew up fishing the Champlain Valley in western VT and now I hail from the Upper Valley in eastern Vermont. I fished almost exclusively for bass in the Middlebury area, and now it's almost exclusively trout over here. Hello to everybody from or living in Vermont - RFMcD, rpistell, Steck123 and to CDMoore: did you find Greg a super soft rod yet? He helped me buy my first fiberglass rod this spring. Great guy. I send everyone there now. |

Hello to all,
another north carolinian here. I live in the broad river basin of the south-western part of the state and fish mainly the rivers and tribs in this system.. I have been fishing these waters for the past 25 years since I was 5 years old or so, but fly fishing exclusively for around 6, or 7 years...I refinished a classic shakespeare a few months back which is what got me interested in classic glass...I am now about to start my first glass build and looking forward to learning much from this forum..thanks to all who contribute knowledge so that we too may sink deeper into this wonderful addiction... -Buddy |

Buddy,
Welcome to the Fiberglass Flyrodders! As you gathered, there are quite a few North Carolinians here. They will want to know all of your favorite streams and fishing spots. There are some really great rod builders posting photos of their rods here. Their work is second to none. But many of the techniques and skills you need for building glass rods are also used for graphite and cane rods too (if you have a premade rod blank). You are right, it is a rather addictive hobby. Welcome Buddy,
You'll sometimes see references from other guys in the region to fishing "the D." That's highly secret, non-intuitive code for a trout stream that pulls me from Atlanta, others from mid-S.C., etc. So if there's an invitation to meet up there, and it works for you, take it. Some of the guys have it dialed in pretty well there. Bob |

Hey thanks for the welcomes guys.
If it is the same "D" that I am familiar with, it is definitely the type of water that pays to have someone clue you into.. I will certainly try to make it to one of those meet up's if I can... cheers. |

Hi to all. I fish Georgia tail waters and some of the larger blue-line streams and rivers. I have pretty much fished glass only for the past 10 years. I used
to belonged to the old board, and decided I need to sign up and upgrade my status from a frequent lucker to at least an occasional poster. The best John

Silvertip,
Welcome to the Fiberglass Flyrodders! A 6-7 foot, 6 weight fiberglass fly rod isn't as common as it used to be. The only stock modern rod I recommend that size is the TFO 6'9" Finesse. It was listed as a 5/6 rod by TFO, but many board members like it with 6 or 7 weight lines. TFO recently sold the last of the run of rods, but these are still available if you look around. If you are considering a vintage rod, the most easily found rods would be from Fenwick and Garcia. The Fenwick FF706 (7 foot, 6 weight) and FF756 (7'6", 6 weight) come to mind. Garcia made a number of rods in the 6'6"-7' range that were rated for 6/7 weight lines. For an Atlantic Salmon fisherman, the most interesting Garcia may be the 6 foot, 1 piece, 2071 model, designed by Lee Wulff. John, Welcome back! I'm glad you decided to post again. With 10 years of fishing glass, you have more experience than most! What rods and lines do you prefer on the tail waters you frequent? Tom |

Tom, Thanks for the welcome. I mainly fish one of the Glastech rods. I have never even cast a Diamondglass, Steffen, or McFarland. I do not have an informed
opinion on rod action but it is nice to have so many good options! I can remember when that was not the case.
I am a leader nut and there is a leader thread that caught my interest. Most likely I will post on these side issues. Thank you and the other moderators for a great board. John |
