Top 5 Dries |
Lead | |
|
Alright, I've been enjoying Blue Dunn's favorite nymph post so much I thought I'd copy and ask what 5 dries you'd have if you could only have
5. Exact pattern, color, and size will keep it interesting, I think. Thanks everyone. I enjoy hearing what patterns everyone likes to fish. I'll chime
in later. Thanks for playing. LOL.

I reckon I'd take the Parachute Adams #16, Elkhair Caddis # 16, Renegade #12, Dave's Hopper #10, and Griffith's Gnat #20. But I think trout are
fussier about dries than about nymphs, so lots of times exact imitations would be better than these general-use dry flies. (And I have limited my choices to
just trout flies without including a deerhair frog or cork popper for bass/panfish, and also have left out the Bomber for steelhead)

Sorry for not posting my list earlier. I was on my way out the door and thought I'd get the thread started and hear what others had to say first.
To date, I do most of my fishing for trout so I'd say my list is: 16 light cahill 20 black ant 18 olive elk hair caddis 16 ginger bi-visible-the bomb for fast water IMHO 14 dark hendrickson Thanks for the replies. I enjoy hearing what flies others like to fish because it does seem to vary by geography, yet many selections are the same or similar. -Dave |

"From my observations I think that most of us spend too much time worrying about our tackle and too little time
learning the intimate characteristics of the fish and streams we fish most."

Orange/yellow stimulator, Elk hair caddis, BWO, Adams and a black beetle or hopper...well that's six, so shoot me.
Catch and Release fishing is a lot like golf. You don't have to eat the ball to have a good time. |

River/stream fishing for trout. 12 royal wulff, 14 parachute Adams, 16 tan x-caddis, 18 cdc bwo, 10 orange stimulator. I would feel comfortable fishing the
local rivers with just the parachute Adams in size 14/16,18 and tan x-caddis in14/16.

1. #10 Royal Stimulator
2. #16 WW Irresistible 3. #8 Foam Hopper 4. #16 Tan Elk Hair Caddis 5. #18 Adams As you can see, I generally hike to where trout are not too selective. My philosophy is "Hmmm they seem pretty picky today and the #10 stimulator won't work...better go down to a 12." I've even gotten to where I only buy a few types of flies and I buy them by the dozen. If I can't catch anything with those dozen or so favorite patterns--I just come back another day when they will work. Donny |

This is a funny question for a guy that walks around with a bulging fly vest, such as myself. My top five are:
#16 Elk Hair Caddis #14 Parachute Adams #20 Parachute Adams #14 Carls Foam Flying Ant #12 Schroeder's Parachute Hopper The Carl's Foam Flying Ant is a pattern from Umpqua that I kill them with at a spring fed pond up by Leadville CO. If i could add one more it would be a #20 Parachute BWO. Wacokid54 |

I can tell where you are from.
Borcher's sz 14 is tops on my list, man the fish cannot resist it when the right hatch is on. I have a box of them. Your list looks pretty close to mine so I will spare the details. |

I'll second the request for the firefly photos. You can't beat Harrison Steeve's as a cool innovator of synthetics for terrestrials, IMHO.
Hey Peter, what are you taking on your cottonwood flies? You catching carp with them? This thread definitely needs some photos and dressings. I'm really enjoying reading what everyone is posting. Thanks guys! -Dave |
