A good friend that's also my neighbor, and an excellent carp and trout fisherman, was kind enough to put me on a location a week or so ago that is less
than 5 minutes from my house and supports a good population of common carp & quill backs that can be approached and sight cast to with a fly. Thanks
Justin !!!
Part of the reason I don't get out much is I guess I had it in my head from "pre-kids" fishing years that when I got out it was for the whole
day, sun up to sun set, or for a whole weekend. My neighbor has made me realize that there are plenty of fishing opportunities that do not require much of a
drive and not that much time.
I've fished this recent gift of a carp spot a couple times this past week and have had a couple hook-ups but no fish landed. Today I had an opportunity
to get out for about an hour and was very fortunate to land my first carp on a fly, which is also my first fish on my Hardy Fibalite, and first fish on my most
recent Bogdan find which is an early 60's Steelhead prototype. It was GREAT to see the carp take the fly and to FINALLY have success bringing it to my
hand. Granted, this was no monster, but it will always have a special place in my memories as the "First"
A few minutes later I hooked up and landed a sunny that rocketed to grab my fly moments before it was in the strike zone for another carp
Within another few minutes, a Quillback was surprised to end up with a hook in its mouth and it was great fun to land a third fish species in the short time I
was out. In all honesty, hooking the Quill was an accident....there was a regular Common Carp that I had thought inhaled my fly and when I set the hook the
Quill was right there next to it and that's what I ended up with.
All in all.....considering I was only gone for about an hour, I can't imagine a better time spent on the water and am thankful to have had the chance
.
Here are some pics of a great "hour" on the water.....
