New Heddon arrived today |

I just purchased this rod off ebay: Heddon Pal Mark III 8403. The rod is pristine. It's quite stunning. The color is off in the photo. Much more brown than
yellow. I tried lawn casting it with a DT6. It needed all 30 feet to load. The same with a WF7 Bass taper. The rod seems quite fast for a glass rod. Anyone
have experience with this rod that could suggest some line.

Nice.
Cameron might be your go-to guy, he's deep into the Heddons...

I would love to know more about this rod, if anyone could help. According to the Wiki, it's not the right blank--suppose to be olive. But everything else
seems to be in order. any help would be appreciated. I'm not too concerned about its collectibility. I prefer to fish with them. BTW, the color matches the
brown eagle claw at the top of the screen.

Sean,
Try WF6 and DT7 as this woiuld be a process of elimination to see what works best. If you don't have those, then bring it to tonight's free casting clinic at the club and I'll have some reels spooled up with these lines for you to test. Les |

I don't understand how those cast differently than the ones I tried. Seems like the first 30 feet should be identical on flyline. "But who's being
naive now?"

The truth about lines | ||
|
Sean,
WF and DT will behave differently on a rod - especially glass. It was a lesson I learned a while ago, but in my mind, the concept never crystallized until Pearow talked about experimenting with different lines/weights. What he proposed made sense: test the lines against the rods. Now I use published rod weights as a guide and play with lines to see what works best for that particular rod. Last winter at Bud's urging, I purchased an Umpqua line scale- that proved to be another turning point for me. I discovered that all these measurements and weight ranges have very little to do with science, and more to do with marketing. Many modern lines stay within their published ranges in grams; however, there are those that are noticeable heavier than older "modern" plastic lines. Somewhere in the history of these lines the manufacturers determined that we "casters" needed heavier lines, so here we are today playing with lines; measuring the first thirty feet; weighing them; and for what? Don't feel naive about all of this: take control and make your own rules... Les |

all,
I got to cast this rod tonight and it's pretty sweet. It carries a 5 WF and a 6 DT well, so I suspect Sean will be using this rod quite a bit on his lake. Les |

it just goes to show that it's not the tools but the artist.

Caught today on my new Heddon. Caught about 15-20 gills in about an hour. The skinny bass came on the first cast today--and I have no idea why the pic is so
much larger than the rest.
[Edit: Tweaked the photos to the same size. There's some nice fish in those pictures! Tom]

so not only is this a fine looking rod, but as luck would have it, it catches fish pretty good too.

Heddon Rods | ||

There was a nice Black Beauty glass rod that sold for a pretty high price last weekend on Ebay.
There was a 8' six weight Lamiglas S-glass rod that also sold high. I was interested in that rod because I have an 8'6" seven weight that has a very soft tip. It's really fun to cast! |

I have a Heddon Pal Mark III 8' #7 Marked "Controlled Flex Action". It is yellower than yours, a very fine weave glass cloth with a gold o-ring
ferrule. I've used it with a DT7 fine. It's a very nice rod and I like it better than their fast tip actions, this one loads more evenly.
I agree a DT6 and WF6 will feel different even with 30 feet of line outside the tip. The 7 feet of line inside the tip is about twice the weight with the DT as the WF - add that weight along the length of a rod and I think you would feel the difference as you swing it. -Vinnie in Juneau |

my son fished my Heddon rod this week in Red River NM. Sorry no pics, because we got skunked. He did have a little brown take his fly, but having never
flyfished on the river for trout, he just looked at it thinking it was pretty cool. But, some very friendly Harley gents from Gunnison, CO (thanks for the beer
guys) were all quite interested in my collection of rods. So I got to show off my Heddon, Phillipson, "Franken-boo" and Dorber Lil Streamer. They
really liked the looks of the Heddon. One was certain it was boo from a distance. None of them are glass guys, but maybe the seed was planted.
