My choice is very similar to your original suggestion, Scuddog. 8' - 8'6" 3/4 or 4/5 wt (with 4/5 if I could only have one). Perfect (for me) would be four piece, 4 wt., 8'6" in a tobacco brown like the 1950's glass. A glass rod like that with a slow medium action would be perfect for most of the fishing I do. This color ... with my apologies to Joe on Bear Creek, whose photo I stole from another part of this forum...

I would cast my vote for a four-piece 8'6" 4/5 weight. I would think weight might be an issue, however. Maybe S-glass could be used.
As for color, I don't think you can beat the color of actual bamboo. Most yellow rods, including Phil's gloss bamboo, tend to be a bit too orange. Maybe Phil could make his bamboo color a little lighter and browner, closer to the bottom rod. (Top to bottom: Phil's Kettle Creek in gloss bamboo and split bamboo)

I'm not in the market for anymore blanks or rods right now, but for what it's worth will chime in on the color question.
While I love the various brown blanks (Steffen, McFarland, Fenwick, etc.), and even the honey yellow Lamiglas color, something different might be nice. Maybe something like this in kind a muted blue dun type color, or maybe like this in a green color (possibly a little darker, more forest green, but not so dark as to wash out the green effects).

I'd like Brook Trout Blue, the same blue-purple-gray color as in DarkStar's avatar. And cream wraps with a crimson trim, a couple of wraps of outside
trim border in light blue. Not too wide. Gunmetal colored guides.
I think you could do a similar scheme for other fish species.

Deep Brown with the ruby wraps tipped with the same orangey color as kettle creek's "cane" colored rods. 4 pcs in a 7 or 7.5 ft at 4/5 wt.

I bought the 8' 5-piece yellow glass Fisher blank from Mike McFarland.
I'm giving serious thought to the notion of doing it up to look like a Wonderod ;^D Dark emerald green wraps, torpedo grip, and maybe even one of those green anodized cork-sleeve reel seats, if I can find one to cannibalize....

I do too. No cork and ring for me- too clumsy.
But I do like the "skeleton" screw down-locking seats on some of the Wonderods. I'm not a big fan of up-locking seats, for some reason, although many of my favorite rods use them.

I already like the matt bamboo colour, but I would seriously consider an eight foot three piece 6/7 wt. His shop has to have more flyfishing and tying and
rodbuilding materials than any shop I have ever been in.

Am I the only one that wants pure, Ivory Snow white? That would look good in any color wraps or grip style and reel seat type.

I'd vote for a nice rich golden brown. Something like the Angler's Mail Scepter blank where you can see the pattern of the glass in the brown finish.

Hey Mojo, speaking of white blanks, someone on this forum had a white Steffen blank a couple of years ago and they were discussing possible thread color
choices. I never heard any follow-up on it after that. It seems this was a blank Mark Steffen had made when he ran out of green material stock that he used to
use for blanks, and hadn't yet settled on his newer chestnut brown color....or something like that. Anyway, this blank was truly beautiful.
Anybody else remember this white Steffen blank? Hmmmm....I'd like to have a couple of white glass blanks! |
