Picked up a 6' 6" Eagle Claw and Shakespeare reel at a Sportsman's Warehouse closeout and put a 6wt line I had laying around. I really enjoy how this rod casts. It great under 30' but after that it was pretty good, just wish the shoreline had let me see just how far I could cast it. First fish on the new rod was this little crappie. Also got this colorful bluegill on an olive sparrow. After just a couple hours with this rod it makes my think I need another slightly lighter wt short glass rod. Well it wasn't great catching but it sure was better then not fishing. Tim

Like the old saying goes any bad day of fishing is better than a good day at work, nice fish and combo there.

I didn't know that Sportsman's Warehouse sold any like that. Last time I was there I did notice that the local Sportsman's Warehouse had two of the Griggs Heritage Fiberglass rods in stock.

Don't trade in that Eagle Claw, it is a good example of a bad example. Some time in the future, when you have obtained more fiberglass rods it will be fun doing a comparison with the WM (Wright & McGill Eagle Claw) I have a mint condition WM Champion, which is identical to the Sweetheart, except it has one less guide. Because of that issue, it is worth, on a good day, $10. It is a 6wt. also, and a little stiff for the gills, like yours, but it is still fun, never-the-less, I keep it if for no other reason than I like it and it makes me appreciate my Fenwicks more. But, I've got to say that I sure enjoy casting my Featherlight. It will never be my favorite as far as looks (although the early brown Featherlights look much nicer than those yellow ones.) It casts like a dream and is an "inexpensive (not cheap!) respectable small stream rod. Flyboy912, it's actually a good example of an inexpensive rod that fishes well without having to pay $300. Oh and TimJ, nice photos, glad to see your little Featherlight did it's job. You must lose a fly to catch a trout. ~George Herbert

Like Cameron, my first fly rod (at least, my first fly rod that wasn't a hand-me-down) was a yellow Eagle Claw. I didn't even know it was fiberglass at the time. I had a blast with that thing. Just wish I'd known how to roll cast back then. Use the Fly, Luke!

W&M certainly has the experience and background to put out a good product. I imagine there are some real sleepers in their past offerings. I think the fish were biting I just couldn't get to them from shore so I'll have to get my pontoon out. I have an older W&M blank I have stripped down and need to rebuild. It was a spinning rod but I can't tell much difference between it and the fly rods. I think I'll make that a spin/fly. I had forgotten just how much more fun it is to fight a fish on fiberglass. Maybe it was the shorter rod too but the panfish didn't just slide up on top like they do with my 8 to 9 foot graphite rods. Tim
