Please rate these reels, as I am getting ready to trade for at least one of them. |

I am in negotiations of a trade. I am trading a non-fishing related item for a rod and reel(s). I know about the rod, but I don't have a clue when it
comes to reels. Please tell me if you know value to the reels and tell me the top pick in the bunch. I can't give you better descriptions right now.

Take the Medalist. It has the most collector value of the lot. It is also the most useful reel of the lot. Medalists can be cleaned up and put back in
service for another 50 years. While the automatics may continue to work, they are far less likely to serve you well.

No brainer. I'll ditto Tom, but the wooden handle has me scratching my head. I don't have a bunch of Medalists. All the ones I have or have seen have
either plastic or bakelite handles. I've never seen one with a wooden handle. Are you sure the handle is wood? Does anyone else know of some Medalists
having wooden handles? Who knows Rick! You may be looking at a big time collectible ...or somebody's quick fix. In either case, I'd STILL take the
Medalist.

The handle is probably bakelite. The current owner sent a picture via cell phone, and it had 3 reels included in one picture, so you can imagine the detail
i was getting. It is a light colored handle, lets just put it that way. Thanks for the info so far.

search the site for your answers because there are so many answers! Some are worth a couple hundred and others twenty bucks. Differences? Over the years there
were many and varied. Find out the age. If it is new it is worth many thirty bucks max.

Update, trade made. | ||
|
I traded an old canoe that was in need of restoration for two fenwick fly rods and a pflueger reel. I got a FF858 (Fenwick / Woodstream), an M-serial FF756
with cork reel seat, and a pflueger 1494 1/2.
Can you tell me about the 1494 1/2 DA? Is it run of the mill, or is it a valuable reel. Its in great shape. Perhaps I will post a picture or two tomorrow. What does the designation of 1494 1/2 mean? Let me know if you know more about this reel than I do (which is almost nothing). BTW, It appears to have the bakelight handle, not wood, as I thought was pictured originally. |

the DA is a decent reel but not valuable. There are dozens of Pflueger topics: here are some >>>>
http://fiberglassflyrodde...&submit=Search+Forum automatic reels are rarely worth more than a few dollars.

I've got a fenwick 858 fly rod and I love it. It'll throw big flies for bass.

I don't throw too many flies for bass, but what I hope to get from the FF858 is a steelhead rod on the tribs of lake erie.

It should work for them as well; steelhead that is.

If you need an anchor or a Priest, take an auto. Otherwise, the Medalist.
