So, OK. Fully realizing the subjectivity of this next question: I can't get along without a 6/7 fly rod. Should I replace the FF856 or use the opportunity to get a Hardy JET 8 1/2' 6weight?

Snapped a Tip |

On my first smallmouth trip this year (local, as it happened), I wrestled the FF856 case up from behind my golf bag, and when it released, SNAP! Three inches
of tip dropped onto the ground. Memo to self: quit golf!!! Two expensive hobbies are too many! Further note to self: ALWAYS replace that tube cap!!

Yes. If you can get a good deal on the Hardy, go for it. Otherwise, FF856s don't get much love on eBay. You can probably find another one fairly cheap. Or
buy both...

when you sell your golf clubs you'll have enough $$$ for any number of rods.

Don't give up on the 856. If it is a basicly clean break, take the broken tip to the hardware store and find the spring assortment. THen find a spring with
a straight section the right O.D. to fit inside the tip. You'll want about 1/2" or more on each side of break. Epoxy it in, overwrap just the break
area. I have a Parametric 8.5 3pc 7wt that I have fished with the above repair for years.
Is also a good use for busted graphite rods, as they have very fine tips that will often fit inside a glass tip section. My Jet is almost too fast for my tastes although I do fish it quite a bit, has a sweet grip, so buy one of those too. Keith P.S. if you are not interested in fixing 856 and wish to sell, let me know. |

Sci Ang #7 is pretty good | ||

I have the FF856 in the 5 pc model and agree it's a very sweet and versatile rod.
The Scientific Anglers System 7 rod is a very good all rounder that you should consider if you come across one. -Vinnie in Juneau |

I've fixed several rods like majicwrench described with piano wire or graphite tips; all of which are still going strong-p-

Dont forget you can get solid glass ice rod blanks from Janns for about $2 they come as short as 2ft and you can cut a .solid glass spigot to make that repair
from it, Thats my choice for such tip internal repairs, those solid glass ice rod blanks are designed for high bend strength and even though their thickness
might surpise you they are designed for fishing rods. I dare say that with a good epoxy job and a light thread overwrap your not going to loose anything to the
repair, those tip section repairs with ice rod blanks are that good.
