Martin MG-3 |

Did anyone else notice that a NIB MG-3 went on ebay last night for $84? I was going to bid, but lost my broadband connection (weather) about ten minutes before
it closed. Hope it went to a deserving fisherperson.

Absolutely I did, causing me to briefly consider selling one of mine, which I won't do. An NIB 67SS just went for about the same. I bought one a month or
two ago for under $10 delivered. It did come in a blister pack, but I have a bunch of the blue boxes anyhow. Either reel is probably worth the price for a guy
who really wants one and doesn't want to spend time waiting on a bargain. I would wait, and in the mean time buy a couple or three USA made Classics for
under $20--same mechanics, more durable finish, a little heavier and a lot less soul, but a solid reel. There are a couple MC 4/5s on right now. I forget if
you have one, but don't sell your MG3 just because of this tweak in the market. You'll get a lot more enjoyment fishing it than having $85. This year,
what little early fishing I've done has been with an MG3, an MG3 SS, an MC 5/6, and a couple of JW Young reels.

whrlpool...CONGRATS on that MG-3. A beautiful example and great to see you GO BIG on these wonderful Martin click and pawls.
Now I'm wondering how I won this beautiful MG-7 a few months back...

Cameron hasn't had much sleep lately
The best Martins seem to fluctuate wildly in price lately along with some other NOS/NIB reels. Don't know who bought it, cross cane one, can you remind with the item# so I can see it? Thanks!

YAWN...I guess middlemac is right. I skipped through the narrative a little to fast I see. Ummmm...I wonder who did buy this gem.
Here is the link. |

Thanks for the link Cameron, that's the first MG-3 I've seen in a standard box.
I wonder if that patchy-looking price tag is covering another model number, I suppose not. Anyway mine was in the bigger blue and gold box. PS I'm tired too, was up until 1:45 this AM.

I hear you guys, I had an early bid in and my snipe set, alas over $10 below the high bid so never even got into the running. Ive had a NIB 63SS setting here
just waiting for a nice little MG-3 to show up at my door. Oh well, perhaps next time. They are a very classy reel, but like you say someone wanted this one
real bad. Think the last MG-3SS only went for around $60 so this one must have been wanted by someone real bad.

Oh My Gosh guys... I didn't know these would be bringing this kind of response. I was the one selling the MG-3. Richard... I just sent you a response to
your snipe and the reel seat you are looking for.
I hate to tell you guys but I got two boxes of martin stuff to unload. a few MGs... extra spools... some of their earlier stuff... just for starters. If that's not bad enough I put a broken Hardy on and the response, comments and question and offers has me taken aback. And like I said in my email to you Richard.... that is just the tip of the iceberg. I will soon be posting pics on our chronically un-kept-up web site unclejakes.net |

Uncle Jake,
Heck, just enjoy the responses! There are quite a few Martin fans on this site. That was a nice reel, keep 'em coming! And welcome to the FFR board.

I need to post more here. This is a great site. I will contribute more but I have been swamped with this old tackle store buy... And I keep finding more
stuff in the junk..
Example... I just unwrapped maybe 8 - 10 brand new glass fly rods from this deal... still in the packages. Nothing too fancy... common storeshelf 1970-80's rods... but cool stuff. I already was into the Fenwicks but I might just save a couple of these old Shakespeares for me. Just for kicks you know. I will get some pictures posted of what my house looks like. Thanks for the very warm welcome. |

I was watching that MG-3 as well, but it got too rich for my blood a long time before the end. I keep reminding myself that I'm not collecting vintage
tackle. My closet might say differently.
Uncle Jake... if you need some help cataloging all that stuff, you could probably get some volunteers around here. Use the Fly, Luke! |

Hi Jake,
Wow, sounds like the doors must have been kept closed for a couple of decades to have kept so much treasure intact so long. Your going to have some fun just going through everything. That your going to make a profit out of your find for sure, these days even in this economy, the collectability of those early rods and reels and such just keeps going up. Do keep us posted here, Im sure quite a few of us have an interest in what you turn up. Richard |

Bring it on, Uncle Jake. Let's see the stuff.
We like it. Middlemac, I've got at least one of the older sky-blue MG 3 boxes, but whichever reel came in it isn't "new" anymore. I'm an accumulator as opposed to collector, and I get reels to fish. Get some rest, Cameron. My bird-hunting mentor thirty years ago use to always advise me, "Get your bird-hunting in now before the legs go." Well, I still get around pretty good on snowshoes, and I'm not as intrepid wading as I once was, but I don't fall in, either. Maybe the memory goes before the legs, which could be good since you can still fish and hunt. But you don't want your memory to go too early, so just for refresher: http://fiberglassflyrodders.yuku.com/topic/4522 That's an MG 3 and landlocked salmon in my avatar.

Believe me.... There is a lot to sort... And a lot to work on. Bunches of partially done rods that alone will keep me busy. I will get some pictures on this
weekend and certainly we will get pictures on our web site of the entire mess(?). Yes there is money to be made but that is only part of it.
The rod building and fly tying stuff we just flat out bought. BUT crates of "junk reels" that were in the shop she just gave me... MAGAZINES... Al never threw away a magazine... I have store catalogs... parts manuals... Then some of it... like all of the Martins... I am selling for this person that I got this all from... It was she (Marge) and her husband Al that owned this shop. I have reasons for wanting to do well in selling this stuff for her. Al passed away last fall. More than just to make a profit.... which don't get me wrong-Uncle Jake definitely likes profit.... we do a lot with teaching tackle crafting and fly fishing. We are starting to do some cool stuff... I helped my TU friends with some vets over at the VA the other day... ((what an eye opener that was)). Saturday we have a free fly fishing seminar we are doing at a park on the Kalamazoo river. So we are trying to do our part to curb the decline in this sport of ours and make enough money to keep it all going. So that is the nickle tour. I will be in touch throughout. |

catalogs and parts manuals. Whoa! I wonder if someone might live near you and would volunteer to help you sort thru all of those goodies. Throw nothing away.

Normally I don't throw anything away... But may be too late. I saw no value to the old Orvis and other outfitter catalogs.... tossed a few of those in my
haste. Then I saw a selection of them go for more on eBay than I thought possible. Just a momentary indiscretion... thankfully it was just a handful. I DO
have to get out from under some of these magazines though. Too much stuff. I have saltwater fly fisherman mags and regular "flyfisherman" I will
check before throwing anything else out.
OH.... I have a few things I pulled out with Don Gapens name... There are a couple of his cedar fly boxes... some of his original Nipigon lures and flies... Those are for my personal collection. Yeah I know... REALLY... I am not trying to gloat. |

"Normally I don't throw anything away... But may be too late. I saw no value to the old Orvis and other outfitter catalogs.... tossed a few of those

I can hear out collective groan as folks read this line. All the work you put into this will be worth if financially and historically. You might be amazed how few old catalogs are out there and what they mean to students of the sport. |

If it has anything to do with fly fishing, there is probably some value. Books always have value, but are usually comparatively easy to find. Magazines and
calendars aren't quite as easy. Catalogs are tough. Price sheets, newsletters, and parts manuals are hard to find. That doesn't mean the price
sheets go for the most money - just that they go to the most serious collectors. Usually limited issue books and magazines with articles by famous authors
will go for the most because more people are interested.

Well... there is all of that stuff... I'll stop pitching the price sheets. Really didn't think much of those. Thanks for all of the advice. I thought I
was pretty on top of what thing are and are not of value.
I bought all of the books... Not a ton... 50 or so. Most were in Als collection but some are mint straight from the store shelf. All in great shape. Marianaro's "In The Ring of the Rise... hard cover/ first addition perfect shape looks like one of the more valuable pieces. Also a first edition Garrison/Carmichael "A modern Guide To Building a Bamboo Fly Rod" |
