$1,000 Outfit |

Today while float tubing on Antero Reservoir in Colorado, I had a guy paddle near and ask what I was catching them on. I told him a gilled callebaetis nymph.
He asked to see one. We paddled closer, and I gave him one to try. He had a bright yellow piece of foam rubber clamped to his rod between the cork and the
stripper. I asked him what that gizmo was, and he called it a rod saver. It's job, to float your rod if you lose it overboard. He said "Hell, this
Winston rod cost $600, the reel $300, and the line was $79. Thats a thousand dollars! The Rod Saver is cheap insurance." He then glanced at my outfit,
and the glance became a stare. I guess he thought my bright blue GC rod was a bit colorful. I said "the rod was $20 on eBay, the reel ( a Martin 72)
was $35.00 at Discount Fishing Tackle, and the line was $15 on eBay." He was amazed. I had trouble keeping a straight face. So what happened next? I
hooked a 20" cutthroat, and while netting it I got excited and dropped my rod!! That big Martin makes a hell of a sinker, and it went straight to the
9' deep bottom. The rod stood straight up, and I was able to pull it up, grab the tip and retrive it, and get back to the business of releasing that big,
fat fish. I have not dropped a rod in a lake for years and years, but that Rod Saver was the curse. Maybe I should get one, or remain calm when landing big
trout ( that will be the day!) That gilled nymph is a great fly during a callebaetis hatch, when the fish are nailing the ascending nymphs. What a day.

Great story there. I had a guy look at me casting a few months ago and he inquired if I was using a bamboo rod, he looked a bit dumbfounded when I told him it
was an old fiberglass rod. I almost wanted to laugh because in a 30 minute period I caught 3 Rainbows with the smallest one being 17" while that guy broke
off 3 fish with his expensive outfit and cursed himself for going fishing that morning. I wound up giving him a fly of the same pattern I was using so he might
have better luck next time, he wasn't a bad guy after talking to him but it sure was funny seeing him go through that hell.

I usually carry a BIIX with a Lamson or an LT5 and a Battenkill LA along with my Fenwick or Lami or McF when fishing stillwaters. Nobody stares that I know of.
I think they'd just be confused if they did.
p.s. How much for 3 "Rod Savers"?

If you flip the tube on a windy day, the tube will go with the wind and the rod will quietly float somewhere else. Instead, get or make a rod leash and keep the two together. I would really like to see a recipe/photo of that gilled callebaetis nymph... Tom |

I get the same responses out here when I'm out steelheading. The usual question I get most the time after I've told them what I'm using
is..."Why?"
go figure!!!!

I don't hear the "why glass?" much . I do get "is that bamboo?" a lot when I'm fishing a yellow rod.

Hilarious!
Dennis, do they make a rod saver big enough to wrap around this guy's fat head?

The fly can be found at www.charliesflyboxinc.com go to the gray box on the right of the home page that has
the list, and click on flybox. Then go to the box to the left of the "get pattern" button and use the down arrow to scroll down to "gilled
nymph, Stalcup's" select that pattern, and click on the get pattern button. If you click on the tutorial, you will see it all. If you tie, you
should look around Charlies site....it is awesome. So is the shop.
You can tie that mayfly nymph in differnt colors and sizes to match local bugs. I use it in lakes for callebaetis, and it is killer. I have to admit, the guy with the $1000 outfit was a nice guy, overall. He really appreciated the fly, and caught some fish on it, which made me happy. And, I have to ask, who was the smarter guy, the one with the insurance plan for a dropped $1000 rod, or me? Thanks for the reminder about tether straps....I just never thought I needed one! More Fun! More Fun! wacokid54 |

Is it bad that I REALLY love that story. I think I might be a reverse biggot. I love catching tons of fish on my cheap homemade glass and (gasp) IM6 import
graphite rods in front of Winston, Sage, and T&T toting fisherman. Is it a bad thing that I take great pride in my frugal tackle. Afterall, I don't
ever feel lacking in the equipment department- I just lack the time to use it these days!

First of all, Lou, people don't think you are a bad person, as far as you know! Second, as long as you don't stay up at night fantasizing about it, I
think a little reverse snobbery is OK. I don't scorn the good guys with extremely expensive gear, but I enjoy knowing that it is the skill of the guy
holding the rod, not the cost of the rod, that determines the catch. It works both ways, as well. That all changes when and if I get a sense of snobbery or
scorn from some guy with a $1000 outfit who always nymphs with weight and an indicator and a 20 foot lob cast., and could not cast a dry fly or streamer 50
feet if his life depended on it. OOPS, note to self, stop the rant. I know some of those dedicated nyphers can out fish me any day of the week, with any kind
of method.
Heck, there are guys on this forum that pay a king's ransom for glass and/or bamboo rods and classic reels, and they treasure them. And fish them. Good on them! But they know it does not make them better fishermen. wacokid54 |

Mojo's question | ||

Mojo, I missed your PS question. The rod saver guy said they are 3 for $10.00 at Bass Pro. He was right! Blakemore Rod Floaters, on their web sight. I know
you fish stillwaters a lot; you should try that gilled nymph. I have had trips where it was the difference between success and skunked.

Funny story Dennis. Maybe because I don't fish where a lot of others go, my few experiences have been positive. Actually I've had guys get kind of a
glassy faraway look in their eyes when I've told them I fish old fiberglass. It's like lost memories have come back to remind them that they used to
fish glass and really enjoyed it. Most want to try a cast or two and get that glassy look again.
After I bought my Orvis Fullflex from Bulldog, I sold my favorite small stream rod, a Bean Featherweight, to a good friend who drooled over it for a year. I'm betting that his expensive graphite will be used a lot less this year.

When people learn that I fish with good bamboo I'm sometimes asked who I'm trying to impress? Answer: No one, because I try to make sure there's no
one around TO impress. I usually go to great lengths to avoid others when fishing. If I'm successful, my tackle is not subject to comment. And, I'm not
much into justifying my behavior to others anyway. My glass rods are very important as they lead to a part of me that time can't change. They are not
explained to anyone.
