Hardy Perfects to LHW? |
Lead | |
|
Does anyone know if the spindle on a pre 1970s Hardy Perfect can be tapped for a reverse screw in order for the reel to be used LHW? Someone somewhere told me
the metal was too hard.

no such thing.
But I would send it to Bill Archuleta, who does this work all the time.
the rods are never obsolete - the marketing is.

Bulldog et. al. Here's Archuleta's reply to my inquiry:
"The metal is not too hard. I could cut off the existing thread and stub in a new left hand one. Problem is what to do with the right hand thread in the spool. The diameter of the thread is 1/4", and the diameter of the spindle is 5/16". In order to clean up the right hand threads to the point where I could put in a full left hand thread, the diameter would probably require at least a 5/16" thread or larger, leaving no registration on the spindle for the spool to rest. Probably not a good idea...there is just no such thing as a left hand Perfect!" |

I'm curious - I would think it could be just drilled and tapped for a thumbscrew.
Did you ask Arch about that? Next try would be Bill Tucker at hardybc.com

Or if the problem is only in converting the righty spool - - you could obtain the lefty spool from someone who has spares.
I have a 1980s era spare left hand perfect spool for the 3-5/8", if that happens to be your need. -Vinnie in Juneau. |

Well looking for a LHW Perfect is on my list too. Frankly there is a 3 3/4in vintage Hardy Perfect online in Ebay right now that was converted By Hardy to LHW,
so they must have at least at one time been able to perform that service. Also there is a more recent 3 1/8in Hardy Perfect LHW for sale as well, so they must
exist, not cheap!!!
I think based on the fact that at least one was altered to LHW by Hardy, that at least one of the older models was able to handle some form of modification. Likewise sense at some point in time the more recent Perfects were offered to a limited degree as LHW that there are some out there. Richard |

I have seen two or three in pictures that were converted to lefty by hardy post manufacture date. One of them had a factory added counterbalance on the
winding plate. It is possible and has been done. I got my winston perfect on closeout a few years back and it switches easily to a lefty. But no agate, for
good or bad.
